The Myths and Legends Trail runs from Nentershausen to Montabaur and is 22.4 kilometers long. The hike is rated moderate; its length and difficulty provide clear benchmarks for choosing your route. Check for possible detours before setting out. After leaving Nentershausen, the route leads into a tall beech forest. It then follows a valley alongside a small stream. After Nomborn, it passes basalt formations on the elevation known as Bornkasten. A marked detour leads to a viewpoint in the forest; the route also reaches the small Bildches Eich forest chapel.

Legends and Local History

Seventeen story panels stand at locations along the Montabaur Legends Trail that are connected with the stories depicted on them. Wooden sculptures were created especially for the trail’s legends. Signposts and panels mark the route. In this way, the trail connects the stories with specific places along the way.

Nentershausen is documented as early as 841: at that time, a chapel there was donated to the St. Lubentius collegiate foundation in Dietkirchen. The parish church of St. Laurentius was built in 1863 and is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic hall church. The half-timbered building at In der Eck 5 probably dates from the 17th century; the half-timbered building at UnterdorfstraĂźe 5 dates from the 18th century. The cemetery contains grave crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Swimming as Another Local Attraction

The local outdoor pool offers a different kind of activity from the hiking trails. The facility has four heated pools, including a 25-meter sports pool, a non-swimmers’ area and a baby pool. There is also a wide-wave slide and diving platforms at heights of 1 and 3 meters. A playground, beach volleyball and a bistro round out the amenities.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

You can reach Nentershausen via the L318 or via the A3, taking the Diez exit and continuing on the L318. For the hiking route, parking is available on RosenstraĂźe beside the church. Roadworks may affect access, so check your route and local parking situation before travelling.

More Highlights in the Wider Westerwald Destination

In the wider Westerwald destination, the WesterwaldSteig offers a much longer hiking option: the long-distance trail is 235 kilometers long and divided into 16 stages. Stöffel Park is a former basalt quarry covering around 140 hectares, where industrial heritage, geological history and nature come together. The Westerwald Ceramic Museum presents the history of working with clay; the objects on display mostly originated in a Westerwald clay pit. Another type of landscape in the wider Westerwald destination is the Holzbach Gorge: the breakthrough valley there is about one kilometer long and characterized by basalt walls up to 30 meters high.
