Astert is located within the Kroppacher Schweiz nature and landscape conservation area. The Great Nister forms a narrow valley there, with some steep slopes. The valley and surrounding heights shape the landscape and make hiking and cycling an important part of travel planning. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Astert, it is worth considering your planned routes too: a moderately difficult hike passes through Astert, and a cycling route runs south from Limbach to the village.

Hiking in the Great Nister Valley

The Kroppacher Schweiz–Limbach loop, “Valley of the Great Nister,” is rated moderately difficult. It covers 15.8 kilometres, with 231 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 4.6 hours. The trail passes through deciduous forests into the Great Nister Valley, reaches Astert, and then follows the river to just before Heuzert. The loop also climbs Hartenberg to another viewpoint; the return route goes via Lützelauer Mühle and the Heunigshöhlenpfad. River and forest sections, the climb, and named waypoints shape the route. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Hike starting point and how to get there

The loop starts in Limbach. Take bus route 270 from Hachenburg to Streithausen; from there, it is about a 25-minute walk to Limbach and the starting point. The road route from Hachenburg follows the K19 through MĂĽschenbach to Astert, then continues along the K20 to Limbach. If travelling by bus, be sure to check the timetables; it is also a good idea to check current route information before the hike. This allows you to factor the additional walk from Streithausen into your journey.

Cycling in the Kroppacher Schweiz

The WW1 Fuchskaute–Hachenburg cycling route is 50 kilometres long and rated moderately difficult. It runs south from Limbach to Astert and loops around the Hohe Ley viewpoint. Temporary closures or diversions may occur along the route, so check the latest route information before setting out. This helps you plan your ride with the route’s length and possible changes to its course in mind.

The Nister Cycle Route is part of the Westerwaldschleife. It runs from Wissen through the Kroppacher Schweiz to Hachenburg and onwards towards the high Westerwald. Along the cycle route through the Kroppacher Schweiz, steep riverbanks and rocky scenery shape the route; climbs lead between the valley and the surrounding heights. This regional route therefore offers a different perspective on the area from the cycling route connecting Limbach and Astert.

A wider hiking perspective

For those wishing to explore the Westerwald beyond Astert, the WesterwaldSteig is a long-distance hiking trail covering 235 kilometres in 16 stages. This is a different scale of planning from the 15.8-kilometre Limbach loop: the WesterwaldSteig is designed to be completed over several stages. If you are planning stages, it is worth checking the latest route planner.

Astert also has a barbecue hut and a youth campsite.
