Üxheim brings together different layers of history: from a Roman-era lime kiln and churches from various periods to railway history in Ahütte. Nature spots and walking routes offer their own highlights. You can plan your stay according to whether you’re most interested in architectural history, a museum or spending time outdoors.

Churches and Architectural History in Üxheim

The lime kiln in Üxheim-Niederehe dates from Roman times and was used privately until the 1930s. The churches reflect other periods and architectural styles: the Church of the Assumption in Üxheim is a Neoclassical hall church, built from 1835 to 1837. St. Joseph’s in Üxheim-Ahütte is a two-bay Baroque hall church dating from 1705. St. Catherine’s in Üxheim-Leudersdorf was built in 1734 as a three-bay hall church; it also has a Baroque wayside shrine.

An older building is St. Leodegar’s in Üxheim-Niederehe, a former monastery church built as a late Romanesque hall in the late 12th century. The former Premonstratensian convent in Niederehe was founded in 1175; the complex includes a Romanesque monastery church and Baroque monastery buildings. The former parish church choir in Üxheim is also worth a look for its architectural history: it is late Gothic and dates from the 16th century. Together, these buildings span a range of styles from the Middle Ages to 19th-century Neoclassicism.

Castle Ruins, a Mill and Public Art

The ruins of Neublankenheim Castle stand in Üxheim-Ahütte. Dating from the early 14th century, the ruins are built of rubble stone and include a four-story fortified tower. In Dreimühlen, the Festes Haus preserves remnants of the walls of the Arenberg forester’s house, demolished around 1825. The former Arenberg mill in Ahütte is a complex of three buildings and a millrace; one of the buildings bears the date 1820.

A more contemporary landmark is the bronze sculpture of St. Martin in Leudersdorf. It stands opposite the community center and was created by sculptor Ulrich Henn. These different places offer varied opportunities to explore the history and design of Üxheim’s districts.

Railway History and Ahütte Railway Museum

The historic Üxheim-Ahütte station opened as a railway museum in 2023, 50 years after rail service ended. The collection includes exhibits, books and railway timetables relating to the history of railways in the Eifel. Regular guided tours explain the development of the village station, as well as historic timetables and ticket sales. Booking conditions may vary; check the information for your chosen date before planning a tour.

The railway museum also has a station café. It serves hot dishes such as pancakes, Eisenbahnerpfanne and Eisenbahnerjause, along with homemade cake. Opening arrangements may vary. If you plan to make the café a set stop for a meal, check the current opening hours in advance.

Walking Routes and Nature in the Surrounding Area

There are several options for a stay focused on nature and walking routes. Stage 8 of the Eifelsteig, from Mirbach to Hillesheim, follows forest paths in Leudersdorf, a district of Üxheim. As the route may change, it’s worth checking the current route before setting out. Dreimühlen Waterfall can be reached from Üxheim by bike or on foot; you can choose a specific route to suit your plans.

The Hönselsberg nature reserve in Niederehe is home to rare wild orchids and can only be accessed on foot. The approach via Loogh is considered particularly attractive. Another option for a break is the 11-Dörfer-Blick viewpoint in Leudersdorf: it is accessible by car and has seating and picnic facilities. The destinations therefore differ in how you get there and what to expect on site. Depending on your interests, you can choose between an accessible viewpoint for a short stop or a walk, and the nature reserve, which is accessible only on foot.
