Oberbettingen offers two clearly distinct perspectives: the Marian Column as a standalone cultural monument and a circular hike that connects the landscape with geological traces. At the monument, its elevated position and the view across the village define the location; along the route, the themes range across Eifel forests, meadows, fields, old quarries and volcanic features. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between a striking structure with a view and a route that explores geological history in several forms.

The Marian Column on an Elevated Site

The Oberbettingen Marian Column is a cultural monument completed in 1956 on Schulstraße/Marienstraße. It is topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary approximately two metres high. The year of construction and the statue provide two specific points of reference: the monument’s date and its religious theme.

The column stands on a raised hill made from waste material from a former quarry, which was landscaped as a viewpoint. From there, the view extends across Oberbettingen and the surrounding area. The location thus draws attention not only to the monument itself but also to its elevated vantage point: the statue of the Virgin Mary and the view across the village are distinct aspects of the same site.

Circular Hike Between Landscape and Geological History

The circular hike begins and ends at the local sports ground in Oberbettingen. It passes through Eifel forests, across meadows and fields, and by old quarries, volcanic formations and small streams. The route thus combines different landscape features with specific geological points of interest. The sports ground is the designated start and finish point, from which the hike can be planned as a circular route.

One notable point of interest is the former Wolfskaul quarry. A well-preserved skeleton of Eifelosaurus triadicus was found there in 1904. The find gives the route a palaeontological dimension: alongside the landscape and volcanism, the trail also explores a specific story of discovery.

At the Lühwald outcrop, volcanic deposits from several eruption phases can be seen. The circular trail also passes the volcanoes Wetschberg and Mühlenberg. In contrast to the find at Wolfskaul, the focus at Lühwald is on deposits from several phases; Wetschberg and Mühlenberg add two named volcanoes to the route’s volcanic theme.

This offers a choice of different highlights when planning your visit. The Marian Column focuses attention on a cultural monument and the view across the village; the circular trail spreads its themes along a route. Within the hike, you can also distinguish between the fossil find at Wolfskaul, the deposits at Lühwald, and the changing scenery of forests, meadows, fields and small streams. You can therefore explore Oberbettingen through a single structure or through the landscape and geological history along the circular route.

Before setting out, check trail conditions and access regulations; both may change.
