The Darscheider Drees and the Biodiversity Trail reveal two different sides of Darscheid: an iron-rich spring and an educational circular hike through diverse biotopes. There are also hiking and cycling trails, a church with distinctive architecture and a theatre tent. From Darscheid, you can also explore nearby maars, walk or cycle along trails through Eifel forests, and plan day trips to the NĂĽrburgring and the towns of Daun and Gerolstein.

The Darscheider Drees and what makes it special

The Darscheider Drees is considered the most iron-rich spring in the Volcanic Eifel; its iron content is 46 milligrams per litre. It is also considered a weakly mineralised acidulous spring with an extremely high iron content. Its sparkling water has long been collected in jugs. The spring can be reached from the Daun exit on the A1 via the L91 towards Darscheid; the car park is behind the sports ground. Check road conditions before setting off.

Hiking and cycling around Darscheid

The Biodiversity Trail is an educational circular route around Darscheid, where you can discover a variety of biotopes. It is 13.5 kilometres long and has 218 metres of elevation gain—specific details to help you fit the loop into your day’s plans. Both the Lewald Route and the Biodiversity Trail lead from the town centre through the Alfbach Valley and past large trees. The two trails add different routes to local hiking plans, while the Biodiversity Trail also draws attention to the biotopes.

If you would like to explore by bike, the Maare-Mosel Cycle Route and the Vulkan Cycle Route are close by. The Volcanic Eifel destination also has a mountain biking network of around 750 kilometres, with more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain. Alongside the named cycle routes, this gives you longer regional rides to consider; check the current conditions on the routes before setting off.

Church, theatre and culture

The present-day Church of the Holy Cross was built between 1969 and 1971. Its architecture includes a freestanding pyramidal tower, above which a golden angel appears to hover at a height of 25 metres. Its construction dates and design make the church a distinctive cultural landmark in the town, separate from the nature trails.

The Kabau theatre tent is a venue for music and theatre events, readings and parties. It has approximately 300 tiered seats. If you would like to combine your stay with an event, check the current programme, as individual dates may vary.

Planning accommodation and excursions

Darscheid offers hotels, private holiday apartments and guesthouses. Check which accommodation suits your travel dates before booking. Local hiking trails, nearby cycle routes and the cultural venues mentioned above offer different ways to plan your stay, without every excursion needing to have the same focus. From Darscheid, you can explore nearby maars, hike or cycle through Eifel forests, and plan day trips to the NĂĽrburgring and to Daun and Gerolstein.

The wider perspective of the Volcanic Eifel

The Volcanic Eifel provides a geological framework for understanding the wider region: 77 maars have been documented there to date, and 350 eruption centres have been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. The iron-rich Darscheider Drees adds a local point of interest to the picture of the Volcanic Eifel.

The Volcanic Eifel destination also offers further hiking options: the Volcanic Eifel Trails are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. This makes it easy to distinguish a local loop such as the Biodiversity Trail from longer hikes in the region. Choose a route to suit the time you have available and check current trail conditions before setting off.
