Mückeln can be explored through three specific themes: a signposted cycling loop, the “Zum alten Eisen” museum, which offers visits by individual arrangement, and the history of Schutzalf in the Alfbach Valley. When choosing a stay in Mückeln, it helps to distinguish between them: the cycling route, an appointment-based visit and historical traces are separate elements. This lets you weigh your interests before deciding on a holiday apartment and planning your days.
Cycling: two distances, two reference points
The signposted circular route is about 12 kilometres long and connects Gillenfeld, Strohn and Mückeln. Along the way, it passes the Volcano Museum, the lava bomb and the Strohn Switzerland. The stops on the route are therefore clearly identified. As a separate point of reference, Mückeln is about 6 kilometres from the main route of the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route. The two figures refer to different things: around 12 kilometres for the circular route and around 6 kilometres to the main route. As route descriptions and signage may change, check the current route before setting off.
Everyday history at the museum and along the Alfbach
The “Zum alten Eisen” museum displays historical household items, including irons, ironing stoves, laundry mangles, waffle irons and butter churns. Tools and radios from earlier centuries are also part of the collection. The objects offer an insight into various aspects of household life in the past, from laundry and kitchen appliances to tools and entertainment technology. Visits are arranged individually. Plan your museum visit for a separate appointment and confirm it in advance.
The Trautzberger Ring and the Sprinker Mill are located in the Alfbach Valley near Mückeln. There are also remains of the altar stones of the Schutzalf Chapel beside the Alfbach. Schutzalf was historically a pilgrimage site where a fragment of the Cross was kept. The named places in the valley are thus connected with a longstanding religious significance. This history can be distinguished from the remains that can still be located today: the pilgrimage and the preserved fragment of the Cross are part of Schutzalf’s historical role.
The Volcanic Eifel in a broader context
The regional context also offers a distinct perspective on volcanic landscapes and geological history. So far, 77 maars have been identified in the Volcanic Eifel. A total of 350 eruption centres have also been counted there, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place approximately 10,900 years ago. These figures and the timeframe place the landscape in a broader geological context, without equating Mückeln itself with a single maar.
The region’s museums cover different areas of interest. While Mückeln’s “Zum alten Eisen” displays historical household items, the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun presents three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, along with exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Strohn Volcano House is an interactive museum; its exhibits include a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high. The distinction is useful when choosing a topic: here the focus is on everyday objects, while elsewhere it is on geological models and volcanic exhibits.
There are also various types of hiking routes in the wider destination. The marked and signposted Volcanic Eifel trails include half-day walks, day hikes and multi-day treks. For a specific comparison, the Vulcano Trail is a 26.2-kilometre circular route east of Schalkenmehren; Stage 11 of the Eifelsteig leads from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. One is a circular route, while the other is a stage between two towns. For mountain biking, the Volcanic Eifel Trail Park offers a network of around 750 kilometres of trails with more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain. These regional options complement the shorter loop through Gillenfeld, Strohn and Mückeln without being the same kind of excursion.
