Merzalben lies in the heart of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. Red sandstone also forms the striking wall that supports the ruins of Gräfenstein Castle. The town combines this special castle site with hiking trails, cycling routes and a historic town center. This lets you choose different ways to spend your stay: a trip to the castle, a ride along one of the cycling routes or a visit to the churches in the town center.

Gräfenstein Castle and the Sandstone Landscape

Gräfenstein Castle, also called “Merzalb Castle,” lies about two kilometers east of Merzalben. The Staufer-era complex is a ruin with well-preserved walls, towers and a courtyard. The seven-sided keep is particularly striking and is considered unique in Germany. The castle offers panoramic views across the Palatinate Forest. It is open year-round and admission is free.

A steep trail leads from the Schäferei hiking parking lot up to the castle in about ten minutes. You can also reach it on foot from the town center: the Palatinate Forest Trail leads from there to the castle after a short climb. Guided tours of Gräfenstein are available; if you plan to join one, check the dates in advance.

From Gräfenstein Castle, the Palatinate Forest Trail continues to the Winschertkopf, a red sandstone outcrop above the Merzalb Valley. The long-distance trail also leads to the Winschertfels viewpoint. It is on the 521-meter-high Vorderer Winschertkopf and offers views of Merzalben, Gräfenstein Castle and the forests of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The viewpoint is freely accessible year-round; free parking is available at the Schäferei hiking parking lot.

Hiking and Cycling Around Merzalben

Merzalben is on the Palatinate Forest Trail long-distance hiking route. Hiking and cycling trails also run through the municipality; they are maintained by the Palatinate Forest Association. This makes it possible to plan different types of outings: the forest trail is a named long-distance route, while the trails in the municipality are also an option for shorter hikes or cycling loops.

For mountain bikers, Merzalben is right on Route 1 of the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park. The route is characterized by a high proportion of singletrack. Check the route details before setting out. Another option is the approximately 46-kilometer Gräfensteiner Land cycling route: it passes through Merzalben, where you can visit Gräfenstein Castle.

The two cycling routes offer different points of reference for planning: Route 1 is characterized by its high proportion of singletrack, while the Gräfensteiner Land route has an approximate total length. Both details help you get a sense of the type of ride planned without treating the routes as equivalent. If you prefer hiking, the Palatinate Forest Trail offers another way to connect Merzalben and the castle on foot.

Town Center and Wildlife Watching

The historic town center is home to the old St. Peter and Paul parish church, with the newer Holy Cross parish church right next door. The two churches side by side add a distinctive cultural note alongside the castle ruins and trails. You don’t have to plan your stay around longer outings: the historic town center is also a specific place to visit in Merzalben.

Wildlife watching can also be part of exploring nature. Animals you may see in the area include hares, roe deer, wild boar, red deer and foxes. Sightings are possible but cannot be planned; they add to the experience of the landscape without being a fixed stop on a route.

For a stay focused on hiking, you can combine the Palatinate Forest Trail with the short climb from the town center to the castle. If you want to get around by bike, you can use the different details for Route 1 and the approximately 46-kilometer Gräfensteiner Land route as a guide. The castle, viewpoint and town center each offer their own destinations, so you can choose based on the activities you have in mind.
