Dahn is located in the Palatinate Forest / Northern Vosges Nature Park and is a state-recognised climatic health resort. There are different ways to plan your trip: hiking trails through sandstone landscapes, rocky outcrops and castle history, mountain biking routes, and the Felsland Badeparadies.

Hiking trails and sandstone cliffs

The 12.7 km Dahner Felsenpfad leads past sandstone formations, through a rock crevice, to viewpoints and through the Wieslautertal valley. Named sights along the trail include Schillerfelsen, Schwalbenfelsen, Büttelfelsen, Lämmerfelsen, Wachtfelsen, and Braut und Bräutigam. The distance gives you a specific point of reference for planning, without specifying a walking time.

At 86.4 km, the Felsenland Sagenweg is considerably longer; in 2013, it was named Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail. The two distances represent very different scales. When choosing a trail, you can first consider whether a shorter route such as the Dahner Felsenpfad or the longer Sagenweg is a better fit for your plans.

Jungfernsprung and Alt-Dahn

Jungfernsprung is a rock massif about 70 metres high in the centre of Dahn. It lies directly on the premium Felsenland Sagenweg hiking trail and the Dahner Rundwanderweg. From the viewpoint at the summit, you can see the Alt-Dahn, Grafendahn and Tanstein castle massif, as well as the surrounding landscape. The rock thus combines a prominent location in the centre with a viewpoint overlooking the named castles and their surroundings.

The Alt-Dahn castle massif is notable for its design and size: it is one of the largest castle complexes in the Palatinate. Rock passages connect the different castle levels to the keep. If you are interested in the complex, you can explore how its various sections are linked.

Mountain biking routes

Cycling routes are also a feature of Dahn. The town lies directly on the MTB-Tour 13 Dahn Mitte route. The wider Dahner Tal is described as having a high proportion of trails across all difficulty levels. As route details may change, it is best to check them before setting off. The Biosphären-Tour returns to its starting point in Dahn; you should also check the details of this tour before your trip.

Swimming and sauna

Felsland Badeparadies Dahn is known as a place to relax and enjoy wellness facilities. The family and leisure pool has a water slide more than 40 metres long. In the sauna area, one sauna is rated as a five-star premium sauna, and the sauna garden covers 7,000 square metres. A Finnish sauna village covering more than 8,000 square metres is also among the facilities described. As facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.

The wider travel destination of SĂĽdwestpfalz

The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape throughout the wider SĂĽdwestpfalz destination. Well-maintained, marked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past striking red sandstone cliffs. The Teufelstisch near Hinterweidenthal is 14 metres high and a popular day-trip destination. The Altschlossfelsen premium hiking trail leads to the eponymous massif, which is around 1.5 kilometres long.

Culture and history are also part of Südwestpfalz. Housed in a former shoe factory in Hauenstein, the German Shoe Museum showcases 140 years of shoe production, the development of the shoe industry in Südwestpfalz and the making of shoes. The historic Gräfenstein Castle offers insights into medieval life. Berwartstein Castle is the only castle complex in the Palatinate that is still inhabited today.

Other regional events offer different highlights: mountain bikers from all over Germany come to the WasgauBike Marathon. The German-French farmers’ market in Hinterweidenthal features culinary highlights. Dahn can be seen as a destination with its own hiking, rock and castle attractions, while Südwestpfalz offers further distinct nature, culture and event experiences.
