Dörrenbach offers a range of reasons to visit: historic buildings, a pilgrimage chapel, a viewing tower and trails with their own themes. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on architectural history, hiking or wine. The different places and activities provide concrete starting points.

Town Hall, Fortified Church and Pilgrimage History

The half-timbered Renaissance town hall, dating from 1590/91, adds a historic touch. Its hall is used for wine tastings and traditional local events. Dörrenbach's winegrowers also invite visitors to wine tastings. If you plan to include a tasting, it is best to check availability in advance.

The fortified Church of St. Martin brings together several periods of history. The oldest part, the lower choir area, dates from around 1300; the choir also contains paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries. Since 1684/85, the church has been shared by both Christian denominations. A bell dating from around 1330 is considered one of the oldest in the Palatinate. The building phases, paintings, bell and shared use each add a different dimension to the history of the church.

The Kolmerberg Chapel also has a long pilgrimage tradition; documentary evidence for the site dates back to 1470. The former hermit's accommodation at the chapel offers an overnight stay for groups and individual guests. If you are considering this option, check availability for your planned dates in advance.

Hiking Trails and Views from Stäffelsberg

The Brothers Grimm Fairy-Tale Trail is 5.9 kilometres long and has seven stops featuring characters from traditional folk tales. The Dornröschen (Sleeping Beauty) Circular Hiking Trail has a different focus: it starts in Dörrenbach and passes the ruins of Guttenberg Castle, the Steinerner Tisch sandstone formation and Stäffelsberg. The trails therefore differ in focus: one centres on fairy-tale characters, while the other features named stops along the route.

Stäffelsberg Tower is considered a viewpoint overlooking the Rhine Plain, Alsace and the Palatinate Forest. In good visibility, the panorama extends as far as the Black Forest and the Vosges. The climb to the platform involves 120 steps. If you plan to visit the tower, you can take this into account when planning your day; views as far as the Black Forest and the Vosges also depend on visibility.

Plan Your Accommodation and Journey

The former hermit's accommodation at Kolmerberg Chapel is a specific overnight option for groups and individual guests. It may be a factor in choosing your accommodation if this type of stay suits your trip. Check in advance whether it is available for your preferred dates.
