Waldsee can be explored through two distinct themes: the local history museum focuses on life in the past, while the bodies of water and cycling paths offer a view of the landscape and the wider travel destination of Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis. For planning, it helps to consider local history, activities by the water and regional excursions separately.

Local history at the Waldsee Museum

The Waldsee Museum presents rural life in Waldsee, near the Rhine floodplains north of Speyer. Its topics include traditional local crafts from the Waldsee area and everyday objects from the early 20th century. Maps, plans and old finds add to this view of local history. An original classroom corner illustrates school life in the past; the archaeology section focuses on the remains of Affolterloch motte-and-bailey castle. The museum therefore brings together several perspectives: everyday objects, historical documents, school and archaeology.

Bodies of water and activities by the water

Waldsee I and II “Auf der Au” form a waterside camping area within a landscape conservation area between Altrip and Waldsee. The area covers around 52 hectares in total, including approximately 25 hectares of water. Walking opportunities around the bodies of water, a network of paths and sanitary facilities are also available. The area figures give an idea of its size; the paths and facilities describe other aspects of this waterside destination.

Schlicht bathing lake lies between Neuhofen and Waldsee. Its water surface covers 26 hectares, and the beach spans 54,000 square meters. Facilities include sanitary amenities, a beach volleyball court and paid visitor parking. Diving is permitted with advance registration and for a fee. If you want to take advantage of this option, check the registration requirements and fee in advance; you should also clarify the parking rules and costs before your visit.

Cycling in the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis

The Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis is an important wider area for cycling tours: it has an extensive network of cycling paths, including the Kraut-und-RĂĽben cycle route. The route passes through green fields and villages and along the Rhine. In the district, cycling paths often run alongside or away from roads with motorized traffic; there are almost no natural climbs. Waldsee is also one of the places from which cyclists can join the Velo-Route Rhein. This information relates to the regional cycling network and complements local topics without assigning every route to a single place.

Regional additions to local history

Culinary information also relates to the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis as a whole: the region’s inns and restaurants serve fresh seasonal produce. If you would like to explore cultural topics beyond the local history museum, museums in Böhl-Iggelheim feature an exhibition on dyeing by the Bechtold family. In the 19th century, the family operated a black, blue and fine-dyeing workshop in Iggelheim; blue-dyeing is recognized as intangible cultural heritage. This is a regional cultural reference and a different focus from Waldsee’s local history.
