Altrip combines old branches of the Rhine, a large bathing area near the town and traces of history. Water features in several ways: as part of a landscape next to nature reserves, as a focus for birdlife, as a swimming destination and as a ferry crossing. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether nature, swimming, a crossing or local history should be the main focus.
Water Landscape and Birdlife
In Altrip, three old branches of the Rhine border nature reserves. This proximity between waterways and protected areas is a distinctive natural feature of the town. The Neuhofener Altrhein is an isolated inland body of water where around 200 bird species have been recorded. These are distinct features: the old branches bordering nature reserves and the birdlife of the isolated body of water.
In the wider Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis travel destination, the Neuhofener Altrhein was designated a bird sanctuary in 1938. Six of the eleven bird species found there that were threatened with extinction in Rhineland-Palatinate were among those recorded. This historical classification adds a distinct nature conservation connection to the approximate number of bird species counted at the water.
The nearby Blaue Adria offers another way to include water in your stay. You can swim at the recreational complex, which has a beach of around 100,000 square metres. When choosing a location, you can therefore distinguish between nature-focused options and a recreational area specifically used for swimming.
Church Tower and Local History
The tower of the Protestant church dates from the early 13th century and is considered the only fully preserved Romanesque tower in its district. Historically, it served as a landmark and distance marker for Rhine boatmen. Its construction date and former use offer two different insights into the building: the tower is part of the church’s history and also had a practical role in navigation on the Rhine.
The Valentinian stele offers another, much later-dated connection to local history. It is 2.20 metres high and was unveiled in Altrip in 2019 during celebrations marking the town’s 1,650th anniversary. This lets you distinguish the church tower’s early 13th-century construction from a precisely dated event in more recent local history.
Ferry and Regional Cycling Routes
The Altrip ferry is used by cyclists, motorcyclists, walkers and families travelling to recreational areas around Altrip. The crossing takes less than ten minutes; its actual duration may vary depending on conditions. If you plan to take the ferry, check the ferry times in advance.
The Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis region is well suited to cycling: it has few significant climbs and an extensive network of dedicated routes. These include the Kraut-und-RĂĽben cycle route, which passes through green fields and villages in the district and runs along the Rhine. For planning purposes, these represent two different scales: a specific ferry crossing at Altrip and a regional cycle network in the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis.
Regional Cuisine
There is also a regional connection to consider when planning meals: seasonal produce from the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis is served in inns and restaurants across the region. So, alongside the water landscape, history and cycling routes, seasonal produce can also factor into your plans for your stay.
