Patersberg combines a striking viewpoint with a clearly defined hiking option: From the Three Castles View, you can look out over the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and the Loreley Extra Tour passes through the town. The church, half-timbered houses and traces of old transport routes also give your stay a historical dimension.

Views and scenery

From the Three Castles View, you can look out over the Upper Middle Rhine Valley towards St. Goar, St. Goarshausen, Katz Castle, Maus Castle, Rheinfels and the Loreley Rock. Along the Loreley Extra Tour through Patersberg, the landscape alternates between deeply cut valleys and almost level high plateaus. The route links a riverside path with viewpoints high above the river; there are also elevation gains.

The Loreley Extra Tour passes through the “Rheinhänge zwischen Lahnstein und Kaub” Special Area of Conservation, crosses the “Mittelrheintal” Natura 2000 Special Protection Area for birds, and runs through the “Rheinhänge von Burg Gutenfels bis zur Loreley” nature reserve. Viewpoints also characterize the surrounding landscape. In the wider Rhein-Lahn travel region, the right-bank section of the Rhein-Lahn district from Kaub to Lahnstein lies in the Loreley Valley and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

Hiking and getting there

The Loreley Extra Tour is 14.3 kilometers long and includes St. Goarshausen, Patersberg and Bornich. It starts at the Loreley Visitor Center or at the market square in St. Goarshausen; hikers can also join the route in Patersberg. The town also offers circular hiking trails and lies on the section of the Rheinsteig designated as the “King’s Stage.”

The route is accessible by public transport. Stops for the Loreley Extra Tour are at the St. Goarshausen market square and on the Loreley Plateau. Check the timetable to plan your specific journey. From the cemetery in Patersberg, the route follows the Forstbach Valley; in the valley section, signs identify Bornsmühle as the next waypoint.

Church and local history

Patersberg Protestant Church was originally dedicated to Saint Pancras. Its tower is Early Gothic, while the church interior has a Romanesque character. Its present form may date from around 1200; the church may also have served as a pilgrimage church in the early Middle Ages.

Patersberg’s first written mention is dated to 1061: it appears in a register of the estates of Bleidenstadt Abbey, which is considered to be forged. A prehistoric transport route passed through the town and was probably used by Celtic groups from the surrounding area. A section of a Roman road built to carry heavy loads was also uncovered near Haushecker Forest. Patersberg has preserved numerous half-timbered houses that were rebuilt after the 1584 fire.
