Uhler Kopf offers two specific ways to enjoy a nature-focused stay: its hiking trails provide lovely views of the surrounding landscape, and there is an accessible barbecue shelter there. Before using the shelter, check locally whether it is available and what facilities it has.

Uhler Kopf and Stage 21

One nearby hiking option is Stage 21 of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. It runs from Kastellaun to Schmausemühle, passing Uhler Kopf and Junkersmühle before continuing through the Deimerbach valley and wooded sections. These named landmarks give a concrete impression of the route without specifying a walking time or a particular day plan. Before setting out, it is worth checking the latest route information, as temporary diversions may be in place.

If you are mainly looking for a viewpoint, you can focus on Uhler Kopf and its hiking trails; if you want to walk a stage, Kastellaun and Schmausemühle provide named endpoints for orientation. These different options can be planned separately. The barbecue shelter is another feature at Uhler Kopf: it is described as accessible, but you should check its availability and facilities locally before using it.

In the wider Rhein-Hunsrück destination

The Rhein-Hunsrück district encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, which is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as parts of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. The region also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. This regional overview describes the wider Rhein-Hunsrück area, not specific features of Uhler.

Hiking and cycling in the district

The Rhein-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified premium hiking trail Soonwaldsteig. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück, running through Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard; it is 410 kilometres long in total and consists of 27 stages. The nearby Stage 21 at Uhler Kopf is a named section of a larger route, while the Soonwaldsteig is another regional hiking option.

Cycling routes are another feature of the district: extensive, well-developed and signposted routes run along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. For the 2026 cycling season, RadBus route 629, the RadBus Hunsrück-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen and on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Since future timetables may change, check the details for your intended travel date.

More regional excursions

The Geierlay suspension bridge is located between Mörsdorf and Sosberg. It is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Several circular trails around the bridge range from three to 14 kilometres; the visitor centre in Mörsdorf is both the starting point and the endpoint. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometres long and classified as moderately difficult. Trail conditions may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out on a hike.

The wider destination also offers options for visitors interested in culture. The Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War through themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents. From 25 April 2026, visitor information lists opening hours as Thursdays and Fridays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the opening hours again before your visit. In Boppard, the Electoral Castle is a medieval fortification right on the banks of the Rhine. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district are included in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site; it was designated in 2002.

Regional specialities and Middle Rhine wine from high-quality vineyards are also highlighted in the Rhein-Hunsrück district. The wider area therefore offers more than hiking and cycling, encompassing cultural and culinary interests as well.
