Oberwesel offers different ways to explore its history and landscape: a significant organ, exhibitions about the town and the Rhine, and a hiking route with viewpoints and connections to wine. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture, architecture, or a route through the surrounding area. Public art and the Weinhex tradition are also among the local themes.
City Wall, Views and Slate
The Schwede-Bure Tour starts at Schaarplatz and follows the medieval city wall to St. Martin’s Church. The viewpoints along the tour include Kackstuhl, with views of the Rhine, and Landsknechtsblick, with views of Oberwesel and the Rhine. Along the way, the route passes the Calvary Chapel, built in 1845, which was once a destination for processions.
The landscape and wine are also part of the route: it passes the Goldemund vineyard site, where visitors can learn more about Oberwesel wine. At a quarry, you can see layers of slate estimated to be 300 to 400 million years old. These stops give the route several distinct features: views, a historic chapel, viticulture, and geological history. Those particularly interested in the landscape will find a tangible point of reference in the slate formations; those more interested in culture can focus on the chapel and the city wall.
Organ and Museums
The Eberhardt/Klais organ in the Church of Our Lady is considered the largest organ on the Middle Rhine. It has 54 stops and 3,621 pipes; its organ case is original Baroque. You can hear the organ at organ concerts, organ matinees, and private organ tours. As program dates may change, check the current schedule before your trip if you want to attend a particular event.
The Oberwesel Town Museum is housed in restored rooms of a former winery and presents life along the Rhine across four floors. Exhibits include a virtual journey along the Rhine and an interactive underwater world exploring the Rhine’s biodiversity. A miniature railway model depicts Oberwesel in around the 1950s. The themes therefore range from a digital exploration of the river to a model of the town in an earlier period.
At the Tower Museum, you can climb the gate tower of Schönburg and enjoy views across the Rhine Valley. The tower rooms present more than 700 years of history. The Oberwesel Cultural Centre features historical information, former costumes, and goblets associated with the Weinhex tradition. The Weinhex is a cultural figure similar to a wine queen and is crowned annually during the Walpurgis Night celebration. As the exact program may vary, it is advisable to check event dates in advance.
Art and Local Tradition
At Oberwesel Sculpture Park, modern art and historic architecture enter into dialogue. Individual artworks extend from the Rhine promenade through the vineyards towards the heights near Urbar. The Oelsberg Art Trail is a project by the town of Oberwesel, the local young vintners’ association, and artists Michael Apitz and Volker Boch. Together, these art projects show different connections between culture and landscape without being limited to the same theme.
The different focuses can help guide your choice of activities: the organ and town museum represent cultural offerings, the Schwede-Bure Tour combines the city wall, views, and vineyard scenery, while the sculpture park and Oelsberg Art Trail put art in the foreground. This makes it easy to explore Oberwesel through the themes that are most interesting to you on your trip.
