Kastellaun offers a range of ways to explore, depending on your interests: its castle and town history, forest trails, hiking paths, cycling routes and waterside activities. This gives you a choice between cultural sites, nature experiences and routes whose length provides a concrete guide for planning your day.

Castle and Regional History

Kastellaun Castle stands in the old town center. It was first documented in the early 13th century, destroyed in 1689, restored in the late 20th century and is now used for cultural events. With the ARGO app, you can view a digital reconstruction on a smartphone or tablet at the authentic castle site. This lets you combine a visit with a look at both the historic site and its digital representation.

The House of Regional History in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. Themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents offer different ways to explore it. From April 25, 2026, the museum will be open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Forest, Water and Summer Trails

The forest adventure park includes an adventure course with climbing and balancing obstacles. Its barefoot trail is 1.2 kilometers long and passes over 20 different surfaces. These offer two distinct experiences: obstacles to climb and balance on, and changing ground surfaces along the trail.

The Kyrill Trail runs through a 1.5-hectare area of spruce forest in the town forest affected by storm damage, showing how the forest is regenerating. It is freely accessible year-round, except in icy or snowy conditions. This restriction is important when planning a visit, especially in winter weather.

In summer, the Lavender Labyrinth beside the cemetery parking lot offers opportunities for walks; flowering conditions may vary. The adventure playground by the lake is designed for children up to age 14. Its facilities include a slide tower, a play castle, a zip line, sand play equipment, a water pump and swings. AQUA fit Kastellaun adds to the water-based activities with a 250-square-meter water area, a one-meter springboard and a three-meter diving platform.

Hiking on Routes of Different Lengths

The Traumschleife Burgstadt-Pfad follows old postal roads through the forest to an outdoor classroom and a viewpoint over the Hunsrück heights toward the Soonwald. The 3 Täler Weg offers a different, clearly measured distance: this 13.8-kilometer circular hike starts in the center of Kastellaun and passes through the valleys of the Trimmbach, Deimerbach and Ourbach.

Parking for the 3 Täler Weg is available at Altstadtpassage; an alternative starting point is Junkersmühle, which can be reached by bus. Before setting out, check the latest route and transport information: conditions and facilities along the route, as well as access details, may change.

Cycling Routes and the Wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck Region

The 38-kilometer Schinderhannes cycle path follows a former railway line between Emmelshausen and Simmern, passing through Kastellaun. Its route avoids busy roads. The HunsrĂĽck-Mosel cycle route takes a different direction, heading from Kastellaun toward Treis-Karden and the Moselle. For the 2026 season, RadBus route 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle path between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle path between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable for your travel dates.

The wider Rhein-Hunsrück travel region includes extensive parts of the Hunsrück, which forms part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the Upper Middle Rhine Valley’s left-bank area. The region’s hiking landscape includes numerous routes, among them the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail; before setting out on a specific hike, check the current route and certification status. This regional perspective complements Kastellaun’s own hiking and cycling options without conflating them with the district’s longer routes.

Route distances, seasonal details and the weather-related access restriction provide practical guidance; for individual visits and trips, it is worth checking the latest conditions.
