Aspisheim combines traces of early settlement and Roman history with religious heritage, winegrowing and sweeping views across the rolling hills of Rheinhessen. This makes for a blend of culture and landscape when planning a trip: archaeological remains tell the story of different eras, while viewpoints and paths offer further perspectives on the surrounding area.

Archaeological traces from several eras

Finds indicate that Aspisheim has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The Roman road from Alzey to Bingen ran through Aspisheim. Near the Protestant church, a Roman bath formed part of a 3rd-century villa rustica; other Roman graves and building remains are also part of the town’s archaeological heritage. A row-grave cemetery from the 6th century adds another chapter to this timeline.

A marble slab marks the site of the Roman bath. Excavations uncovered a semicircular basin measuring 3.40 metres in diameter and 0.7 metres deep. This provides specific architectural details of the complex alongside its historical context.

Church history in Aspisheim

The choir tower of the former St Martin’s Church dates from the early 13th century. The church is also part of the “Gothic Churches in Rheinhessen” circular route. This places the historic building within a wider regional theme, while its date also provides a distinct reference point in Aspisheim’s local history.

The present-day Catholic church was built in 1951, after the former chapel was abandoned following the Second World War. Six 18th-century statues of apostles and a Madonna from that chapel have been preserved in the Catholic church. The town’s history is reflected both in the construction date of the present church and in the older works of art transferred from its predecessor.

Views and paths through the landscape

Goldacker is Aspisheim’s highest point. From there, the view stretches across the hills of Rheinhessen to the Donnersberg in the Palatinate and the Feldberg in the Taunus. Around three kilometres of paved farm tracks also serve as walking paths. Those who prefer to explore the landscape on foot will find both a viewpoint and paths used for walking.

Another perspective can be enjoyed from the Wingertschaukel Rheinhessenblick above Aspisheim. From there, the view sweeps across the hills towards the Rheingau and the HunsrĂĽck. The wooden seats have backrests and are designed for two people. Goldacker and the Wingertschaukel mainly differ in the directions each view encompasses.

Cycling and Aspisheim wine

Aspisheim is connected to the association municipality’s cycling network, which links all its local communities. A cycling tour from Sprendlingen via the Zotzenheimer Horn can continue along a cycle path to Aspisheim. The Sprendlingen-Gensingen area has more than 70 kilometres of cycling and hiking trails. These details offer different ways to plan: the local network, a specific route connection and the wider range of trails in the area.

Local features include soils formed from ancient river deposits of sand and gravel, where certain grape varieties thrive. Various wines are served by the glass and sold by the bottle in Aspisheim. If this is important to your trip planning, check what is currently available in advance.
