Nackenheim brings together the rolling hills of Rheinhessen, the Roter Hang and the Rhine. If you are planning a stay here, you will find a range of ways to explore the area: trails through vineyards and valleys, insights into the history of this wine-growing town, and train connections to the region. Each viewpoint and circular trail has its own focus, so you can choose based on whether you are more interested in the landscape, wine or local history.

The Rhine, Vineyards and Views

From Ehrenkreuz, the view extends south over the vineyards on the Rothenberg towards Nierstein, and northeast as far as the Frankfurt skyline. At Kisselwörth lies a volcanic vent around 55 million years old; basalt is visible there only when the water is low. The water level therefore determines when this geological feature can be seen. Since 1952, the boatmen’s mast on the banks of the Rhine has been a landmark of Nackenheim’s boating community.

Hiking Two Distinct Trails

The RheinTerrassenWeg from Mainz to Worms passes through Nackenheim and offers views towards the Rhine, the Odenwald and the Frankfurt skyline. The EichelsbachTalweg starts on WeinbergstraĂźe, passes gardens, meadows and orchards through the Eichelsbach Valley, and joins the RheinTerrassenWeg again. The trails offer different scenery: views take centre stage on the RheinTerrassenWeg, while the EichelsbachTalweg leads through the valley and its gardens, meadows and orchards. The routes described offer different impressions; trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out on your hike.

Discover Local History

The local history trail leads to more than 35 historic buildings, squares and attractions. Its themes range from medieval monastic courtyards to Baroque buildings and notable figures. Information boards at each stop feature QR codes that link to further information. This makes it possible to experience the trail not only as a series of stops, but also as an overview of the history of this wine-growing town.

The Bergkapelle also connects different eras: it probably first served as shelter from the weather for vineyard workers around 1750, and was converted into a chapel in the first half of the 19th century. In the courtyard of the Nackenheim local history museum, the Lapidarium of Nackenheim’s funerary culture displays more than 30 professionally restored gravestones. This stop adds a distinct perspective on funerary culture to the history of the buildings and trails.

Wine Culture and Places to Eat

The Alte Mistkaut on the RheinTerrassenWeg is a former storage facility renovated by the municipality, where essential supplies for the state winery were stored. Open wine tastings are held there during the local wine festival. Nackenheim winemakers also offer group wine tastings; contact the participating wineries in advance to ask about availability and capacity. Some winemakers run wagon tours through the vineyards, with wine tasting, views, explanations of winemaking, and Weck and Worscht. Contact the winemakers directly to check availability.

Nackenheim has wine taverns and seasonal wine taverns that welcome visitors. As individual businesses and their opening arrangements may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. If you want to get to know the wine landscape in ways beyond a walking trail, consider the tours and tastings described as different options: the trails take you through the landscape, while wine tastings and wagon tours put winegrowing at the centre.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

Nackenheim has a railway station with an S6 S-Bahn connection and regular train services to Mainz and Mannheim. Check the current timetable before travelling. Along with the trails, viewpoints and historic sites, this provides a practical basis for choosing where to stay, without requiring you to plan all your excursions in the same way.
