Hördt lies between the Hördt Rhine floodplains, tobacco fields and asparagus fields. Nature and cultural experiences sit side by side here: hiking trails pass through forests, meadows and floodplains, while the church, monastery wall and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk reflect the town’s history. The asparagus tradition also shapes the town. During your stay, you can choose between nature trails, historical sites and regional cuisine.
Hiking trails through forests, meadows and floodplains
The Eichtalweg passes through forest and meadow landscapes. It includes a 2 km forest and bird nature trail that offers an insight into local birdlife. The route is rated easy and takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes. Parking areas are designated on site for the Eichtalweg; check current parking conditions if needed. If trail conditions change, check them on site.
The Treidlerweg offers a different focus. This easy premium circular hiking trail is 12.6 km long and follows the Michelsbach through an internationally protected, ecologically intact floodplain landscape. Along the route are areas with yellow irises, grasses and reeds; fishponds and water-filled pits contain pond lilies and water lilies. The trail also follows the historic route of river towing, when people or draft animals pulled ships upstream on the Rhine. The Treidlerweg is impassable during high water. Check the water level before setting out.
Monastery history and the town’s character
The Catholic parish church of St. George is listed as a historic monument; the core of its nave dates from 1750. The town’s surviving historic structures also include a section of the monastery wall and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. From the early 12th century until the middle of the 16th century, the monastery of Hördt was the wealthiest knightly monastery in the former Electoral Palatinate and a religious center for the surrounding area. The surviving architectural features and the monastery’s historical significance offer distinct, tangible connections to the town’s history.
At the Old Forester’s House, Hördt volunteers generally offer tours of the exhibitions free of charge. Check in advance whether a tour is available. Hördt is also known beyond the region for asparagus, which is served in many varieties every year; asparagus fields are also part of the landscape surrounding the town.
