Nimsreuland lies in the Nimstal valley on the L5 between Bitburg and Prüm. The Nims Cycle Route and the village’s historic farms and wayside crosses provide specific points of reference for planning your trip. When considering the cycle route, it is worth distinguishing the section through Nimsreuland from the route as a whole.

Cycling between Schönecken and Lasel

The section of the Nims Cycle Route between Schönecken and Lasel runs along the Nims through Nimsreuland. It adds around six kilometres of cycle path to the route and was completed and officially opened in September 2022. The approximately six kilometres refer to this section, not the length of the entire tour. This gives you a specific point of reference when considering the local section of the route.

The Nims Cycle Route as a whole is 64.4 kilometres long, is rated as moderately difficult, and runs from Weinsheim near Prüm to Irreler Mühle. The northern section runs from Weinsheim through the Schönecker Schweiz to Bitburg and features steeper climbs and descents. These details answer different planning questions: around six kilometres refers to the section between Schönecken and Lasel; the length and difficulty rating refer to the cycle route as a whole. The steeper climbs and descents are also noted for the northern section.

Historic farms and wayside crosses

A shaft cross on the main street is dated 1696. At Schweißtal 1 stands a substantial transverse farmhouse, dated 1804, with an extension added in the 19th century. To the north, on the road to Schönecken, is a wayside shrine dated 1786, featuring a relief of Saint Catherine. Another wayside cross southeast of the wayside chapel is dated 1758 and bears a relief of Saint Matthias.

The agricultural buildings also show traces of different periods. Another farm building from the 19th century stands at Schweißtal 2. The Winkelhof at Hauptstraße 2 is situated right beside the Nims and dates mainly from the mid-19th century. At the same time, the historic building preserves older features, including a former smithy and largely historic paving. Thus, precisely dated crosses and religious reliefs stand alongside farms whose building history spans several phases. Those with a particular interest in architectural history will find both individual notable landmarks and details on the farm buildings.

Route 5 on the Willibrordus Trail

Route 5 on the Willibrordus Trail offers another point of reference. It passes through Nimsreuland, by the Heisdorfer Bach and through Lascheid. Near Meyersruh in the Schönecker Schweiz, the route passes a rest stop with rock formations and a pilgrim’s tomb. The two route options therefore also differ in how they guide you: the Nims Cycle Route focuses, among other things, on route length and difficulty; for Route 5, the places mentioned and the rest stop provide specific points of reference. This can help you decide whether you would rather follow a cycling route with stated distances or the waypoints of the pilgrimage trail.
