Kruchten lies in the Southern Eifel Nature Park, where gently rolling hills and dense forests shape the surroundings. This makes it a nature and hiking destination to consider when planning a trip, with more to explore than a single route: Circular Route 51, other hiking trails, St. Maximin Church and the history associated with Neuafrika each offer a different focus. If you are planning a longer hike, you can take its duration and route characteristics into account; the town’s history offers another way to experience your stay.

Hiking Circular Route 51

Circular Route 51 is a 14.6-kilometre circular hike rated moderate. The tour takes about 3 hours and 54 minutes—a hike lasting several hours to plan around for the day, rather than a short walk around town. The route starts and ends at the Kruchten-Schwarzenbruch hiking car park, opposite the riding stable. Route data and information about the start and end points may change; check them before setting out.

The trail passes through dense forests and along natural paths. Other trail surfaces include gravel, field and farm tracks. Tall beech trees line the route before the deciduous forest gives way to very dense coniferous forest. A small stream runs alongside the circular trail. The route therefore alternates between different types of forest and paths, with stretches close to the water.

In clear weather, views from the heights extend over villages, hills and fields. Red deer are spotted relatively often along the route, though sightings are variable and cannot be guaranteed. There are also numerous hiking trails in the area around Kruchten beyond this particular route.

Church, local history and Neuafrika

The Catholic parish church of St. Maximin has a medieval west tower. The earliest recorded mentions provide another glimpse into the past: Kruchten was first documented in 751 and 763 under the name Cruten. The church building and the town’s name thus offer two different insights into its history.

The hamlet of Neuafrika is also associated with a story: it tells of an emigrant who never reached his destination. This local tale adds another aspect of the town’s history to the architectural and written records.

Regional setting: the Southern Eifel

In the wider landscape of the Southern Eifel, orchards, forests, meadows and pastureland shape the scenery. The broader travel destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm has its own regional themes, including mining history, palaeontology, military history and architectural heritage.

The MĂĽhlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine includes a mining trail with numerous information boards about the history of mining in the region. One-hour guided tours cover ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. Check the current tour schedule before visiting. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex topics in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwall Museum is set across three accessible levels of a bunker; its military history exhibition is housed in underground corridors and rooms.

The Rittersdorf moated castle, around 700 years old, has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers an impressive picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture. The castle has a privately run restaurant serving fine regional cuisine; check that it is open before your visit.
