Euscheid is a village in the Eifel with a compact circular trail, a long settlement history and an organic shop right on a family farm. The Islek Trail – Euscheid combines sweeping views with several cultural points of interest over 4.7 kilometres. Local history and shopping add further ways to discover the village to your hike.

The Islek Trail: a loop with water and wide-open views

The circular trail is 4.7 kilometres long, with 40 metres of ascent and descent. The distance gives you the route length, while the elevation gain and loss complete the elevation profile. Along the way, the trail passes the Euscheid pond and offers sweeping views. Water and open vistas are two distinct landscape features of this loop. If you are looking for a walk with specific points of interest, you can experience both on the same outing.

Museum, tunnel and tree alphabet

The Islek Trail also includes Peter Schmitz’s farm museum and a tunnel on a former railway line. Alongside the scenery, you’ll find a local museum and a reminder of the former railway. Check the latest listing for the farm museum before setting out.

Another local feature is the tree alphabet along the Enz Cycle Route. The trees there were planted in alphabetical order by Euscheid’s village community. Unlike the stops on the Islek Trail, the tree alphabet is a distinct feature of the cycle route: its alphabetical arrangement and the village community’s involvement make it a special way to discover the trees along the route.

Traces from different eras

Euscheid was first mentioned in a document in 1489. At the same time, traces of settlement date back to the Celtic-Roman period. These include Roman-era finds and a Celtic burial mound on Tonnenberg. The village’s history is therefore marked both by a specific date for its first written mention and by older traces of settlement. These different historical points of reference give the village more than one single point of reference in time.

An organic shop on the Gompelmann family farm

Gompelmann’s organic shop is located right on the Gompelmann family farm in Euscheid. Its products include organic eggs, cheese, spelt grains, potatoes, honey, egg liqueur, pasta, vinegar, oil and apple juice. The selection may change, so if you’re making a special trip for a particular product, check the current range before you visit. Shopping here is a destination in its own right, alongside the hike and the historical points of interest.

Practical planning information

The Islek Trail is suitable for pushchairs. As the trail surface may change, check before setting out that the current conditions are suitable for your pushchair. Parking for the circular route is available at the village hall or the sports ground; check the parking rules before travelling. You should also check the route details again before setting out.

There is no direct train connection to Euscheid. The nearest railway station is in Gerolstein. If you’re travelling by train, check the current service and plan your onward journey separately. This way, you can factor the journey into your stay as a separate part of your plans, alongside the hike.
