Hamm Castle is open to visitors, and holiday apartments are located in a side wing of the fortification. Hamm thus combines a visit to a historic site with the option of staying overnight on site. For planning your trip, the minimum stay of two nights, the architectural history, and the location in the winding Prüm Valley are useful points to consider.

Hamm Castle and Its Architectural History

The medieval fortification in Hamm was first mentioned in 1052. The core of Hamm Castle dates from the Late Middle Ages; its present-day appearance is dated to 1895/96. The complex underwent extensive restoration from 1885 to 1896 and was extensively restored again in 1998. These dates represent different historical periods: an early mention, medieval building fabric, and the later shaping of the complex.

Hamm Castle is designated as a monument zone. Much of the surrounding wall dates from the 14th century; the complex also includes two towers and a keep from this period. The gatehouse, dating from the 16th century, is also among the older structures. Several building phases thus come together within the castle grounds, rather than its history being reducible to a single date.

The buildings also offer different points of reference in time: the two-storey castle chapel is dated to 1700 and contains three Renaissance tombs. The four-storey castle building bears the date 1586; its core is believed to date from the 14th century. Those interested in architectural history will therefore find later additions and dates here alongside the late medieval core.

Holiday Apartments in the Side Wing

The holiday apartments are located in a side wing of the fortification and can be accessed from the inner courtyard. Bookings are available for stays of at least two nights. This lets you compare the minimum stay with your planned length of stay in advance.

The spacious inner courtyard offers facilities for children to play and barbecue facilities. Whether these amenities are available may depend on the accommodation arrangements. If you plan to use them during your stay, check their availability in advance. The location of the apartments in the side wing and access via the courtyard also give you a clear idea of the accommodation's layout.

The Prüm Valley, Forest, and Trails

Hamm lies in a particularly winding stretch of the Prüm Valley, below Hamm Castle. The municipal area covers 174 hectares, of which 107 hectares are forested. The castle stands on a ridge above a small settlement, surrounded by forest and encircled by the Prüm River. Different landscape features thus define the village and the castle: the winding valley around Hamm, and the ridge, forest, and river around the castle site.

Nature Park Südeifel Loop Trail No. 22 offers panoramic views of Hamm Castle and passes through the Echtersbach Valley and Hammer Büsch, a hillside forest. The loop trail starts and ends in Wißmannsdorf. Near Biersdorf am See, it runs parallel for several kilometres to the Bitburger Brewery Route, a Nordic walking trail. The route therefore combines a view of Hamm Castle with other named landscape areas; the parallel brewery route is designated as a Nordic walking trail. Check the current route before setting out, as it may be adjusted if the trail changes.
