A plateau beside the riverside road offers views of the lock in operation in Sankt Aldegund. There is also a historic village center, wine-related attractions and paths above the river. Your stay can therefore have a range of different focuses, from watching the river traffic to cycling and hiking or exploring half-timbered houses and churches.
Enjoy the Moselle and its surroundings outdoors
You can watch the lock in operation from the plateau. The lake-like stretch of the Moselle in front of Sankt Aldegund is also suitable for water sports. Conditions on the water depend on the season, so take this into account when planning if you want to get active yourself.
Above the vineyards, Raulwing-Platz is a recreational area with facilities for picnics and grilling. It offers a different setting for spending time outdoors than watching the river or going on a tour. You can plan a break here without treating the site as part of a hiking or cycling route.
The Moselle cycling network along Sankt Aldegund is considered well developed and signposted. On a tour, the Moselle Cycle Route runs from Neef through Sankt Aldegund to Alf. If you plan to include this stretch, check the route conditions and signage before setting off; both can change.
Hiking trails and route options
The Felsen.Fässer.Fachwerk cultural trail is about 9 kilometers long in total. The main route covers 5 kilometers, and the additional circular route is 4 kilometers. This makes it easy to factor the distance into your day: you can stick to the main route or add the circular route. The total distance is approximate; trail conditions may vary.
The Palmberg Trail also offers a hiking option of its own. Sturdy footwear is required; take the trail conditions into account when choosing your route. An additional loop from the Palmberg Trail passes through natural areas, woodland and fields. Numerous other hiking trails run above the Moselle lock and offer views across the Moselle Valley.
Half-timbered houses, churches and local history
In the historic village center, brown ceramic plaques on most historic buildings provide information about each house. Along Christophorusstraße and Auf der Teusch, Moselle winegrowers’ houses feature half-timbered upper floors dating from the 15th to the 18th century. Well-maintained half-timbered houses and townhouses also shape the village’s appearance. A walk through the area offers a close look at the architectural styles and history of individual buildings.
The Romanesque church in Sankt Aldegund has a valuable altar dating to 1601. The Old Church is used for religious celebrations and cultural events. A footpath through vineyards and gardens leads to it, with views over Sankt Aldegund from there. The Ludwig burial site can be seen from the outside.
The village’s history on the Moselle includes a former small harbor. It served as a landing place for horse-drawn towing on the Moselle, when horses were used to pull boats. This is a historic point of interest, not an indication that a harbor is currently operating.
Wine and nature
Sankt Aldegund is known as a wine village. You can enjoy wines from the Himmelreich, Klosterkammer and Palmberg Terrassen vineyard sites. Where these wines are currently available may change. The Goldkaul Cave offers a different connection with nature and is considered a place where bats sleep. Together with the hiking trails and the river, it illustrates the range of ways to shape your stay.
