Hiking from Gornhausen
The Roman Trail leads from Gornhausen towards Haardtkopf and offers panoramic views at Kaisergarten. Gornhausen is also considered a gateway to the Grafschaft circular trails and long-distance trails such as the Eifelsteig, Moselsteig and Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig. The hiking options are shaped by varied landscapes, viewpoints and quiet forest paths. This means that a specifically named trail sits alongside other circular and long-distance routes when choosing a route. Before setting out, check the route on site and first decide which type of route best suits your timeframe.
Local attractions and places to visit
Local attractions include a 300-year-old oak, an old mill, KlaramĂĽhle, the Barbelley viewpoint rock and the transmitter on Haardtkopf. There are also views towards the Eifel and the Moselle region around Bernkastel-Kues.
Bernkastel-Kues and the wine-growing villages of Wintrich, Brauneberg, Burgen, MĂĽlheim and Veldenz are considered accessible destinations for excursions or walks from Gornhausen. Bernkastel-Kues thus features both as part of the view of the Moselle region and as a destination in its own right. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether the trails and attractions in Gornhausen or a trip to one of these places will play a greater part in your stay.
Trails and nature in the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination
The wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination is where the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the HunsrĂĽck, rich in forests and meadows, meet. The 816-metre-high Erbeskopf is ideal for hiking and offers a wide range of winter sports. At Erbeskopf, the National Park Gate provides information about nature and the environment; its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and bogs.
Two routes in Manderscheid also differ in their key details: the moderately challenging Manderscheider Burgenstieg is a 5.4-kilometre circular hike around the castles, taking two hours. The Burgenklettersteig follows a three-stage route around the two castles, is about four kilometres long in total, and has fixed cables along one kilometre of it.
The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route runs from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues over 58.5 kilometres along a disused railway line. A bike bus takes cyclists on the route from Bernkastel-Kues back to the starting point; the return journey can be booked in advance. Check the timetable when planning your trip.
Culture and wine in the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination
The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502; Klausen remains a destination for pilgrims every year. The Cusanus birthplace in Kues is used as a museum and event space and features a permanent exhibition about Nicholas of Cusa.
For wine tastings, the vinotheque in the historic vaulted cellars of St. Nikolaus Hospital offers wines from the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer. Its selection includes 100 wines, from quality wines to ice wine.
