Steep vineyards, two nature trails with different themes and historic doors give Brauneberg a varied character. When planning your visit, you can choose between insights into winegrowing, nature and architectural history—or combine these discoveries with a wine tasting.

Vineyards and trails with different focuses

The Brauneberger Juffer comprises south-facing vineyards with slopes of up to 87 percent. This distinctive steep slope is a defining feature for anyone interested in winegrowing and the landscape. The short Weinkundeweg circular trail on the edge of town offers a different perspective on work in the vineyards: themed panels cover the work of winegrowers throughout the year.

The forest nature trail has its own focus. It is about three kilometres long, and more than 60 information panels introduce native plants and environmental topics. The trails therefore differ not only in approximate length but also in content: the Weinkundeweg focuses on the annual work in the vineyards, while the forest nature trail focuses on plants and the environment. Check the signs and access before setting out.

Historic doors and Roman winemaking history

To explore Brauneberg’s architectural history, look for Renaissance and Baroque doors on the town’s half-timbered and stone houses. There are more than 100 of them. This makes the search a specific theme for a walk, without limiting you to a single architectural style.

Another historical highlight is the Brauneberger Römerkelter, a Roman wine press dating from the 2nd century. It lies at the foot of the steep southern slope of the Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr, opposite Brauneberg. Two different connections with wine come together here: the Roman wine press and the Juffer vineyards. The former Franciscan monastery church of St. Josef is another notable historical landmark. Today it is a Catholic parish church, with a remarkable crypt inside. Check whether the interior is accessible before visiting.

Wine tastings and insights into the harvest

Almost all the wineries listed in Brauneberg offer wine tastings, some in multiple languages. A tasting can be combined with a regional menu and a cellar tour. If you would like to plan these activities, check the booking arrangements in advance and confirm which wineries are participating and which languages are offered.

Guests can help with the grape harvest on request. This is a seasonal offer and should be confirmed in advance. A wine tasting, a cellar tour and the opportunity to help with the harvest are different ways to explore winegrowing; the latter is explicitly subject to request and seasonal availability.

More to discover and practical options

The Nussbaumallee is said to be the longest walnut tree avenue on the Moselle. Its trees are up to 300 years old, and the avenue’s leafy canopy invites you to linger. For a break with a different focus, there is also Minigolfplatz ChriJus: this modern facility is located at the Alter Festplatz in the town centre. Check current operating details before visiting.

The tourist information office in Brauneberg offers bicycle rentals, including e-bikes. If you mainly want to explore on foot, you can choose between the two nature trails based on their themes. To learn more about the wine tradition, wineries offer tastings and—on request—the opportunity to help with the grape harvest.

Brauneberg within the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination

The wider destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich encompasses a landscape where the volcanic Eifel, the Moselle Valley and the Hunsrück, rich in forests and meadows, meet. The 816-metre-high Erbeskopf is also located there, offering hiking and a variety of winter sports. These regional options complement Brauneberg’s own attractions but do not replace the choices available locally.
