Dhaun Castle is an important cultural monument in the Nahe and HunsrĂĽck region; its historic appearance is exceptionally well preserved. The medieval fortress was built in the early 12th century. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a Baroque castle under Wild- and Rhinegrave Carl. This provides a clear focus on cultural history for planning your trip, which can be combined with hiking and cycling trails in Hochstetten-Dhaun.

Castle History and Works of Art

The castle grounds include underground passages and a 10,000-square-meter castle park; both can be visited daily. A guided visit combines Dhaun Castle, St. Johannisberg Collegiate Church, and the Nahe Skywalk. This offers a choice of different aspects of the area: architectural history, religious art, and a viewpoint overlooking the Nahe Valley.

The Protestant Church in Dhaun also preserves evidence of the castle's history: 24 biblical panel paintings and twelve paintings of apostles and evangelists come from the former castle chapel and date from the first half of the 17th century. Reproductions can be seen in the ruins of the former court chapel at Dhaun Castle. St. Johannisberg Collegiate Church contains funerary monuments of the Dhaun Wild- and Rhinegrave family. They trace the development of sculpture over four centuries, up to the mid-18th century. The church was elevated to collegiate church status in 1318.

Another historical highlight is the ruin of Brunkenstein. It was one of the military-strategic outposts built in 1336; the remains of the walls are clearly visible there. The historic sites therefore differ in purpose: the churches preserve works of art and funerary monuments, while Brunkenstein recalls a fortification.

Hiking, Views, and Cycling

For a longer hike, consider the Wildgrafenweg. The route is listed as 13.3 kilometers long, with a stated duration of 4 hours and 15 minutes. The recommended starting and finishing point is the “Hochstetten-Geological Nature Trail” hiking car park in Hochstetten-Dhaun. Along the way, the trail passes the ruin of Brunkenstein and offers a view of Dhaun Castle. The distant views extend across the Hunsrück heights, the North Palatine Uplands, and the Nahe Valley. The Wildgrafenweg also leads into the Itzbach Valley, where protected wetlands are located.

The Nahe Skywalk is a viewpoint in its own right: the 65-square-meter platform projects seven meters beyond the edge of a former quarry, offering views into the Nahe Valley. If you are looking for a cycling route instead of a hike, the Nahe Cycle Route runs through the districts of Hochstetten and Hochstädten. Another hiking option in the municipality is the Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrimage Trail. The options are clearly distinct: the Wildgrafenweg has a listed route length and duration, while the Nahe Cycle Route passes through the two districts mentioned, and the pilgrimage trail offers another hiking option.

Getting There and Planning Meals

One way to reach the Wildgrafenweg is to take the RB33 to Hochstetten (Nahe) station, followed by a 900-meter walk via BahnhofstraĂźe and Dhauner StraĂźe. Check train and bus connections before your trip. This is especially helpful if you plan to travel by train for the hike and want to factor in the walk to the trailhead.

Restaurant Wappensaal Dhaun is in the district of Dhaun, close to Dhaun Castle, the Wildgrafenweg, and the Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrimage Trail. The panoramic terrace and beer garden offer views of the Simmerbach and Nahe valleys; the restaurant serves regional, seasonal, and themed cuisine. A guided experience in Hochstetten-Dhaun may also include a tasting of four selected regional wines and regional dishes. As booking details and availability may change, check them before planning such an experience.

You can factor the Wildgrafenweg's route length, duration, and access into your day's plans; guided experiences may include additional visits or a tasting. This lets you choose your accommodation in line with your planned stay and decide whether hiking, cycling, or culture will be the main focus.
