A trip to Hennweiler can be shaped around local history, outdoor activities and views. Options include church architecture and the Backes (traditional bakehouse), a 6.3-kilometre village tour, a 1.7-kilometre mountain bike trail and several viewpoints. These themes offer different ways to focus your stay, without prescribing a fixed itinerary.

Churches, Architectural History and the Backes

The Protestant St Stephen’s Church is distinguished by a massive chancel tower dating from the 12th/13th century. The former chancel contains graves and frescoes, and the church has a Stumm organ dating from 1846. The Old School is also a protected monument. Together, the church and the listed building offer two different perspectives on the village’s history.

Hennweiler’s Protestant church stands on a slight rise in the historic village centre. Its Baroque nave was built in 1790/1791. A Romanesque priest’s portal was uncovered on the exterior in 2018. The Romanesque church tower was rebuilt after a major fire around 1436; based on stylistic comparison, it is dated to the second half of the 13th century. The church therefore brings together a Baroque nave and significantly older architectural features.

The Backes is considered Hennweiler’s largest and only bakehouse. Every year, it is part of the Beer and Bakehouse Hike, which involves three villages. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the specific date in advance, as this recurring tradition may change.

Trails, Elevation and Views

The Hennweiler village tour is 6.3 km long, with an elevation difference of 70 m. The Devils Rock Trail is 1.7 km long and designated as a mountain bike route. Its features include natural and flow sections as well as small and larger jumps. The trail is considerably shorter than the village tour, while also differing in its mountain biking features. You can therefore decide in advance whether to focus on the longer village tour or the shorter MTB route during your stay.

Blickenstein on the Soonwaldsteig is at an elevation of 582 m, while Wehlenstein is at 498 m; the Teufelsfels observation tower is another option. The two elevations can be compared directly, while the tower adds a distinct viewpoint to the selection.

Practical Information

The motorhome parking area in Hennweiler has space for three motorhomes; this capacity may change. Three CEE power connections rated at 1,200 W each are provided. If you plan to use the site, check the current capacity and power supply details before travelling.

The Teufelsfels Hut is available to people seeking shelter; an overnight stay is also possible if needed. A restaurant in Hennweiler serves Kirner beer and regional Nahe wines such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Dornfelder. As the drinks selection may change, ask in advance if you have a particular interest.

Culture in the Bad Kreuznach Destination

The wider Bad Kreuznach destination offers other distinct cultural attractions. The bridge houses in Bad Kreuznach were built from 1480 onwards due to a lack of space. These half-timbered buildings stand on piers of the old Nahe bridge, which was built around 1300. Since 1985/86, the museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor, set in a historic park.
