On the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest, Wachenheim an der Weinstraße combines wine trails with a rich architectural and local history. Here, walks through the wine country sit alongside late medieval and neo-Gothic buildings, as well as experiences centred on wine and sparkling wine. For planning purposes, you can organise your stay around these different interests: a walking route, a visit focused on history, or an insight into sparkling wine production can each offer a different emphasis.

Wine trails and views

The Riesling Tour starts at the market square and runs through the wine country towards Bad Dürkheim. It then heads back towards Wachenheim and climbs up to Wachtenburg Castle. From the tower, panoramic views stretch across the Palatinate vineyards and the Palatinate Forest. The tour thus combines a route through the wine country with a destination offering views of both landscapes.

The 172-kilometre-long Palatinate Wine Trail offers a longer perspective and also passes through Wachenheim. This is another way to include the town in a hiking itinerary, distinct from the Riesling Tour, which starts at the market square and climbs up to the castle. Most of the wine-country circular trails in Wachenheim also lead to historic sights. If you prefer a pilgrimage route, Wachenheim is on the Star Trail, the Chemin des étoiles from Speyer towards Saarland.

Castle, church and local history

Wachtenburg Castle, Wachenheim’s landmark, dates from the 12th century; its surviving parts have been restored. A visit combines the history of the castle with the view from the tower, although each offers a different perspective: the site represents the town’s historical development, while the panorama takes in the vineyards and the Palatinate Forest.

St. George’s Church also reflects different building and use histories. Its core is late Gothic; the eastern part is Catholic, while the neo-Gothic nave served as a Protestant parish church. At the Ludwig Chapel, built in 1443, you can discover another historic site; it now serves as a cultural centre. The excavations of the villa rustica also document Wachenheim’s Roman history. Together, these places offer different ways to explore the past rather than focusing on just one period.

Experience wine and sparkling wine

Bookable wine and sparkling wine experiences are available at Schloss Wachenheim, Wachtenburg Winzer, Weingut Dr. Bürklin-Wolf and the wineBANK in a historic cellar. The wineBANK experience can be booked year-round for groups of four to twelve people. If you are interested in how sparkling wine is made, cellar tours at the Schloss Wachenheim sparkling wine cellar explain how it is produced today.

The Chapel Museum offers another way to explore the history of sparkling wine: historical exhibits explain the history of sparkling wine production. The museum is open daily and can be visited independently of the tours; check its opening arrangements before your trip. This lets you choose between a tour focusing on modern production and an exhibition about its historical development.

More activities and practical information

Themed guided walks include the autumn chestnut hunt. Horse-drawn wagon rides are also among the activities available to visitors. The Kurpfalzpark is described as an amusement park for nature lovers and adventure seekers. These activities offer a different focus from the historic walking routes and the wine and sparkling wine experiences; which ones suit your stay depends on how you want to spend your time.

There is an e-bike charging station at the town hall square. Check visitor facilities again before your trip. If you choose Wachenheim as your base, you can organise excursions, cultural visits and wine experiences around your own interests, without having to turn the different themes into a fixed daily itinerary.
