Kallstadt lies directly on the German Wine Route, at the foot of the Haardt hills. Its vineyards cover around 270 hectares, including the Saumagen vineyard site. Hiking trails in the Palatinate Forest also start here, while half-timbered houses, wine estates and historic buildings invite you to explore the village. You can shape your stay around different interests: in Kallstadt, wine, local history and outdoor activities go hand in hand. When looking for a holiday apartment in Kallstadt, consider which of these aspects of the village you would like to focus on during your trip.
Vineyards and Trails Around Kallstadt
In Kallstadt, the name Saumagen refers both to a vineyard site and to a culinary specialty associated with the village and served in restaurants. If you would like to learn more about winegrowing, you can ask the Kallstadt Winemakers’ Cooperative about guided wine tastings, cellar tours or vineyard walks. These activities take place by arrangement and may change, so confirm an appointment in advance.
You can also explore the landscape on foot along a range of trails. The Kallstadt–Herxheim am Berg trail starts at Platz der 100 Weine and follows the upper edge of the Felsenberg. The route offers views across the Haardt foothills and the Rhine Plain. The Palatinate Almond Trail passes the entrance to the Berntal/Felsenberg nature reserve before reaching Kallstadt. Hikes in the Palatinate Forest can also start from Kallstadt.
For a different kind of route, the Saumagen Trail climbs gently from Kallstadt to the Saumagen vineyard site; along the way, you’ll see views of the Rhine Plain and the Odenwald. The Kallstadt–Villa am Weilberg–Bad Dürkheim circular hike runs through vineyards on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, mainly on paved paths and partly on natural trails. There are no significant climbs. Before setting out, check trail conditions and markers, and pay particular attention to current signposting on the Saumagen Trail.
Village Character and History
Kallstadt’s main sights include numerous half-timbered houses and wine estates. The vine-covered pergolas at Saumagenplatz are a particular highlight. St. Salvator dates back to 1772, and its tower is 36 metres tall. The church combines a Gothic lower section with a Baroque slate dome. Inside is an organ by Geib, an organ builder from Saarbrücken. Another point of interest is a historic well with a trough, guarded by the Kallstadt lion.
The archaeological site of Villa am Weilberg lies on the edge of the village. Information boards and exhibits explain the former Roman vineyard estate, and excavated sarcophagi are also on display. Check access locally before planning your visit. This excursion offers a different experience from the vineyard trails: here, the focus is on Roman history and its finds, while the Saumagen Trail highlights the vineyard site and the views.
Experience Wine and Plan Your Visit
Saumagenkerwe is an annual wine festival in Kallstadt, celebrated in early September. As the date may change, check the current events calendar if you would like to plan your trip around the festival. Kallstadt’s i-Punkt, the village’s tourist information office on the German Wine Route, may also be useful when planning your trip. Check its opening hours in advance.
Bus route 453 takes you to the Kallstadt/Kirche stop from Bad Dürkheim or Grünstadt; check the current timetable before travelling. Parking is available at Platz der 100 Weine, with time limits in effect. This lets you adapt your arrival and excursion plans to the day. If wine is the focus of your stay, consider the Winemakers’ Cooperative’s activities by arrangement and the Saumagen vineyard site. If you prefer spending time outdoors, choose between the trail along the Felsenberg, the Saumagen Trail and the loop via Villa am Weilberg. The different route descriptions can help you decide based on views, trail surfaces and elevation changes, without assuming a particular route length.
