A winegrowing village on the Wißberg

Gau-Bickelheim is a winegrowing village at the foot of the Wißberg. From there, views stretch across the rolling hills of Rheinhessen. At 271 metres, the Wißberg is considered the second-highest elevation in Rheinhessen. If you are choosing between countryside and cultural themes, Gau-Bickelheim offers both: its location on the Wißberg and a historic village centre with market and religious buildings. The Wißberg is the landscape’s defining feature; the village’s buildings offer a different perspective on its history.

Village centre and religious history

Much of the traditional appearance of Am Römer, the historic market square, has been preserved. This includes the town hall and the vaulted Römerkeller. Together, the square, town hall and cellar make the historic centre itself a point of interest, rather than just a single building. Those interested in traditional townscapes will find a different focus here than in the religious buildings.

St. Martin’s Parish Church was built between 1845 and 1853. On the Wißberg, the Kreuzkapelle is a sandstone landmark and a former pilgrimage site; the present-day chapel was built between 1907 and 1910. The path to it passes 14 Stations of the Cross. The construction dates and former function describe different historical layers: its present form dates from the early 20th century, while its role as a pilgrimage site belongs to the past.

Cultural themes in the wider Alzey-Worms destination

In the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the focus shifts from individual buildings to longer periods of time. The prehistoric and early historic exhibition at the Museum of the City of Alzey traces the cultural history of central Rheinhessen from the Neolithic through the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages to the Merovingian period. It therefore documents a period of more than 6,000 years. The difference from the local village centre lies in the scale: here, the focus is on the development of an entire region over several eras.

Also at the Museum of the City of Alzey, the geology and palaeontology exhibition explores the Mainz Basin. Its development over millions of years can be traced through minerals, particularly fossils. Together, the two exhibitions offer different historical perspectives: one places human cultural history in the context of different eras, while the other follows geological changes over a much longer timespan. If you would like to compare culture and Earth’s history, this is a thematic complement to Gau-Bickelheim’s architectural and local history.

The Alzey Art & Culture Trail in the wider Alzey-Worms destination offers another regional perspective. It leads through the vineyards and includes 20 works of art and 22 vineyard huts. Art in the vineyard landscape thus joins the area’s architectural history and museum themes. This offers a concrete distinction when making your choice: the route brings together artworks and vineyard huts, while museums explore historical or geological periods.
