Osthofen has a winegrowing history stretching back more than 1,300 years; today, more than two million vines grow here. A 3.5-kilometer self-guided trail leads through the vineyards, while historic sites also shape the landscape.

Winegrowing and Wine Experiences

The wine shop at the shared tourist information center in Osthofen offers wines and sparkling wines from municipalities in the Wonnegau collective municipality. The selection may change. At participating wineries, informal visits with wine and a small snack are part of the hospitality; depending on the location, these take place in the courtyard, barn, cellar or tasting room. Which wineries participate and when they open seasonally may change. So check in advance where a visit is possible.

Another option for a group is the bookable outdoor escape tour “In vino veritas.” It leads through the Osthofen area, where groups solve puzzles; a bottle of Wonnegau wine is included. Tour duration, availability and booking partners may change. Check the details before planning your tour.

Vineyard Trails and Longer Routes

The Weinbergschneckenweg is a 3.5-kilometer self-guided hike through Osthofen’s vineyards. Vineyard huts and information panels about grape varieties line the route. It leads to the hilltop church, set among old trees and historic graves. Check the route details before your hike. Other hiking trails in Osthofen also explore the winegrowing landscape and offer sweeping views of the town and surrounding region.

At around 75 kilometers, the RheinTerrassenWeg is a much longer route. It runs above the Rhine between Worms and Mainz, offering views and points of interest. The railway runs parallel to the trail, making it possible to hike shorter sections and return by train. If you include this option in your plans, check timetables and connections in advance.

Church, Mill and Local History

The hilltop church makes a striking stop at the end of the Weinbergschneckenweg. Its present-day Baroque nave has an organ gallery featuring biblical scenes painted by the Seekatz brothers in 1747. Furtmühle offers another perspective on Osthofen’s history: it is considered the town’s oldest documented mill. Its richly decorated Renaissance entrance is dated 1598.

The local history museum in Osthofen brings together the history of crafts and technology. Exhibits include tools from historic trades, a working blacksmith’s forge and a threshing machine from the 1950s. Other displays cover industrialization following Osthofen’s connection to the railway in 1853. The museum thus focuses both on practical tools and on how the town changed over time.

The Osthofen concentration camp memorial addresses a distinct and difficult chapter of history. Its permanent exhibition covers persecution and resistance in Rhineland-Palatinate from 1933 to 1945. It also features a reading room for research into the Nazi era in the region, special exhibitions, talks, seminars and cultural events. Information about the camp’s history is available outdoors.
