Huverheide is one of Tönisvorst’s major apple-growing areas; fruit growing also shapes the scenery along the Apple Route. With its large orchards, blossoming fruit trees and individual historic destinations, you can focus your trip in different ways.
Apple growing as a feature of the landscape
Apples are the main fruit grown in Tönisvorst. Large orchards are home to varieties such as Boscop, Elstar and Rubinette; Huverheide is one of the city’s most important apple-growing areas. Along the Apple Route, fruit fields and blossoming fruit trees shape the landscape. Apple growing is a constant feature, while the blossom is seasonal. If this particular landscape is important to you, take the season into account when planning your trip.
Historic destinations and excursions
Haus Raedt dates back to the 17th century and is privately owned. You can catch a glimpse of it from a detour off the cycling route; the house is not open to visitors. This lets you include a view of the building in your excursion plans without expecting to visit the interior.
Another idea for an excursion is the historic “Schluff” museum railway, which starts in St. Tönis. It is worth taking a detour. Check the current timetable before planning your trip. The destinations offer different highlights: the Apple Route showcases the agricultural landscape, Haus Raedt can be viewed from the path, and the Schluff is a railway excursion destination.
Viersen as the regional setting
With its towns and municipalities, as well as Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, Viersen District is an important part of the Lower Rhine tourist destination. Within the wider Viersen travel destination, the 122.8-kilometre BahnRadweg Kreis Viersen is one of the region’s cycling routes. It runs on or alongside disused railway lines, passing open fields and quiet forests, and leads to the lake district of the Krickenbecker Lakes.
Another cycling route within the wider Viersen travel destination is the Rundweg Viersen. A good starting point is the boat landing on the Niers near Viersen-Süchteln; the route initially follows the Niers for several kilometres through the Saalbruch nature reserve. Detours lead to the Clörather Mühle viewpoint and the historic centre of Dülken at cycling junction 40. There you will find the Geschichtsmeile and the Narrenmühle, an old post mill with a carnival museum. The circular route also passes St. Maria Hilfe der Christen parish church in Dornbusch. The two regional cycling routes offer different highlights: the BahnRadweg Kreis Viersen is 122.8 kilometres long and leads to the lake district of the Krickenbecker Lakes. The Rundweg Viersen focuses on its first section along the Niers through Saalbruch and detours to the viewpoint, town centre and church. You can choose between them based on the total distance or the destinations mentioned.
