Brüggen combines a historic town center with nature experiences in Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. The landscapes vary too, from forests and heathland to wet meadows and the Schwalm floodplains.
Nature and outdoor activities in Brüggen
Brüggen is located in Schwalm-Nette Nature Park and is surrounded by forests, lakes and nature reserves. Brachter Wald brings together heathland and pine forest habitats, where you may encounter characteristic animal species. Diergartsche See lies parallel to the Schwalm and offers opportunities for walking and fishing, amid diverse natural surroundings and wildlife. This allows you to contrast the forest and heathland setting of Brachter Wald with the focus on water at Diergartsche See.
Hiking trails pass through scenic landscapes and attractive towns. Premium trails offer wayfinding and designated highlights. One longer, specific option is the guided hike in Schwalmbruch: the premium trail is 16 km long and runs alongside nature reserve ponds and wet meadows.
There is also a wide choice of cycling routes, from relaxing rides in nature to more challenging trips, and Brüggen has well-developed cycling infrastructure. The circular route “Around Brüggen – The Western Section through the Border Region” is 30.79 km long and is considered an easy, family-friendly ride. It follows the Schwalm floodplains to Venekotensee and continues into the Wachholderheide heathland. At Nikolausplatz, there is a charging station for e-bikes and pedelecs, as well as a bicycle repair station available around the clock.
Town center, museum and wildlife park
Brüggen has a historic town center. The Mensch & Jagd Museum explores themes ranging from the first hunter-gatherers to hunting today. A walk-through diorama depicts the landscapes of North Rhine-Westphalia. So, alongside nature and outdoor activities, you can also choose to explore local history and the museum’s subject matter.
Natur- und Tierpark Brüggen offers animal feeding and opportunities to interact with animals in a wooded setting. There is also a large playground and a bistro. Brüggen also offers leisure activities, sports and playgrounds. If you are weighing up different options, you could include a museum visit and a stroll through the town center, a guided hike or a cycling route in your travel plans.
A regional perspective on the district of Viersen
With its towns and municipalities and Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, the district of Viersen is an important part of the Niederrhein tourism destination. The 122.8 km Viersen District Rail Trail runs on or alongside disused railway lines through open fields and quiet forests, leading to the lake landscape of the Krickenbecker Seen.
Another example in the district of Viersen is the Viersen Circular Route. A good starting point is the landing stage on the Niers near Viersen-Süchteln. From there, the route initially follows the Niers for several kilometers through the Saalbruch nature reserve. Detours lead to the Clörather Mühle viewpoint and the historic center of Dülken at cycling node 40. Highlights include the historic History Mile and the Narrenmühle, an old post mill housing a carnival museum. The circular route also passes St. Maria Hilfe der Christen parish church in Dornbusch. Check current route conditions before setting off.
