A 25-kilometre cycling loop through the town, an extensive network of paths in the city forest and a nearly six-metre-long chorobate reveal different sides of Rheinbach. There are also historic buildings, theatre and events with dates that vary. Whether you prefer spending time outdoors or exploring culture and history, you can choose activities to suit your interests.

Explore Rheinbach by Bike and on Foot

A 25-kilometre branch loop of the 124-kilometre Rhineland Apple Route runs through the town of Rheinbach. The Mittelland Route, a D-route in Germany’s long-distance cycling network, also passes through Rheinbach for part of its course, then continues southeast to Meckenheim and on to Bonn. These details offer different points of reference: the Apple Route description focuses on the length of the branch loop, while the Mittelland Route description covers its wider course. Check local path conditions before setting out; for the Mittelland Route, also check the current signage.

Rheinbach City Forest is a popular local recreation area. It has an extensive network of paths, including main paths, smaller walking trails and bridleways. To visit the forest chapel, you can travel by car or bicycle, or walk there along the hiking trails in the city forest. Parking is available at the hiking car park. Since path conditions can change, it is a good idea to check the situation on site.

Roman Heritage and Preserved Buildings

The Roman Aqueduct Information Centre is in the heart of Rheinbach, roughly halfway along the Roman Aqueduct Hiking Trail; admission is free. In the exhibition, you can see a nearly six-metre-long chorobate and an authentic section of the Roman aqueduct. The centre is also a starting point for hikes, walks and cycling trips, including routes away from the Roman aqueduct. The exhibition and outdoor activities are different ways to explore the Roman heritage and the surrounding area.

Himmeroder Hof is a Franconian farm complex on Himmeroder Wall, close to Rheinbach Castle. The surviving sections date from the first half of the 18th century. Today, the only part remaining of Rheinbach Castle itself is the Witch Tower, which is open to visitors. Another historic stop is the ruins of Tomburg in the Rheinbach district of Wormersdorf. They stand atop a 316-metre-high basalt cone.

Guided Tours, Theatre and Events

Castle and town tours are offered in Rheinbach throughout the year. Night watchman tours also take place several times a year. If you plan to join a tour during your trip, check current booking arrangements and dates in advance.

The events calendar also features recurring events, though their specific dates and programmes may vary. At the annual Rheinbach Open-Air Summer Cinema, locals and visitors watch films together under the open sky. Rheinbach Classics brings the 1950s and 1960s back to life each year in mid-July; the event includes, among other things, a classic car show known throughout the state. “Kultur im Hof” has been an open-air festival for several years, held on Himmeroder Wall directly in front of the Himmeroder Hof cultural centre, and is considered a summer cultural highlight.

Rheinbach Town Theatre adds to the choice with a varied programme of comedies, farces and dramas. The performances change. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth checking event and theatre dates against your travel dates.

Leisure Park with Activities for All Ages

Rheinbach Leisure Park offers sports, fun and relaxation for all ages across more than 15 hectares. Facilities include a water play trail, a climbing locomotive, a play and toboggan hill, and large playgrounds. The range of play and activity options makes the park a leisure destination in its own right in Rheinbach. Individual facilities may be affected by maintenance work; check their status before your visit.
