A Scales Trail, a centuries-old pilgrimage and a geological path give Hennef (Sieg) a range of distinctive attractions. When planning your trip, you can choose how to combine cultural history, family-friendly trails and landscapes according to your interests. Specific differences can help you decide: some trails lead to historic sites, while others specify their length or offer different route options.

Discover local history on walking tours

Hennef is one of 22 stops on the Beethoven walking tour. It connects places in Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district that Ludwig van Beethoven is known to have visited in person: eleven stops are in Bonn and eleven more in the district. Hennef Town Hall also houses a permanent exhibition, “Crocodiles under Palm Trees – Mining in Hennef-Rott.” It displays fossils millions of years old from the Hennef-Rott fossil deposit.

Two other routes focus on different subjects. The historic buildings route runs from the Old Town Hall in Hennef to Haus Telegraph in Hennef-Söven. The history of each of the 36 historic buildings is briefly explained at the stops. The Hennef Scales Trail comprises 22 stops from Hennef Town Hall via Zissendorfer Hof to the railway station. It celebrates the history of Hennef’s invention of weighing; the Chronos scale can be viewed at several locations.

In Bödingen, the pilgrimage continues to focus on the miraculous image of Mary. The original is in the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (“Zur schmerzhaften Mutter”). For 600 years, the Feast of the Compassion has been celebrated there on the fourth Friday after Easter. The Marian Way leads to the Marienbrünnchen, known as a healing spring, with an interpretive stop, and continues to the richly decorated pilgrimage church. The pilgrimage tradition and its stops give this part of Hennef a different focus from routes exploring the town hall and local history.

Hiking trails with different focuses

Opened in 2025, the Hennef Family Hiking Trail loops around the Rosental through meadows, pastures, woodland and fields. Along the way, it introduces children to the environment, agriculture, nature conservation and biodiversity in a playful way. There is a short loop of 3.7 kilometres and a long loop of 5.5 kilometres. The trail is particularly suited to families with children aged around six and up. Its amenities include two information stations, nine interactive activity stations, several places to rest, an extra-large bench and a drinking fountain.

For comparison, the children’s hiking trail in central Hennef is 2.7 kilometres long and has ten stops. It is designed for children aged four to eight, who explore the town centre with adult support; its stated route is shorter than both Rosental loops. In Stadt Blankenberg, there is also the children’s adventure trail “Save Stadt Blankenberg”: at eight stops around and through Stadt Blankenberg, children solve puzzles and fill in the gaps in a mysterious parchment.

For a longer-distance route, the Natursteig Sieg offers three stages of a quality hiking trail stretching around 200 kilometres from Siegburg to Mudersbach, all or part of which pass through Hennef. Another option is the Kulturlandweg, a circular route starting and ending at Hennef (Sieg) railway station, or alternatively at the Siegdamm hiking car park. It follows the Sieg riverbank through a floodplain landscape lined with old lime trees, passes above overgrown former vineyard terraces to a higher resting place, and goes by remnants of the former Ziethen mine on the Sieg.

Hennef (Sieg) railway station, the starting point for the Kulturlandweg, is served by the RE9, S12 and S19. Check current connections before travelling. This lets you factor in early whether you want to focus on a circular route with two possible starting points or individual stages of a longer hiking trail.

Stadt Blankenberg: Castle, viticulture and audio points

The main castle of Stadt Blankenberg is a medieval fortress built between 1150 and 1180. Today, the city of Hennef is responsible for the main castle and its outbuildings. The local history museum is housed in the 13th-century Katharinenturm and features, among other things, a scale model of Stadt Blankenberg and its castle complex.

The wine museum in Runenhaus offers insights into the centuries-old history of viticulture in Stadt Blankenberg. The wine trail through the former vineyards also starts at the museum. Another way to explore the area is the audio tour: twelve listening points are located along a route of around two kilometres from Katharinenturm to the castle; their content is available on a smartphone through the Lauschtour app. The museum, wine trail and listening points each offer a different way to experience Stadt Blankenberg.

Geology and the Kurpark landscape

The Hennef rock garden on Steimelsberg, above the Kurpark in Hennef-Geistingen, is a geological trail with 22 rock formations. It introduces visitors to the region’s geological history. Also in the Geistingen district is the Sebastian Kneipp spa house, opened in 1912 and now converted into a modern senior living residence. Together with the adjoining Kurhaus promenade, it forms an ensemble in the Kurpark.

The Burgweg also leads to natural attractions, including fishponds and the “Ahrenbachtal and Adscheider Tal” nature reserve. Between the geological trail, hiking paths and historic routes, you can choose the theme you want to shape your trip to Hennef.
