Brühl can be explored in different ways: an interactive book route connects the history of its districts with puzzles, while the Art Walk leads through the historic town centre. There is also a longer walking route and the gardens of Augustusburg Palace, with their distinctive garden history. When planning, it is worth comparing the theme, length and route. This will help you decide whether you would rather discover Brühl’s districts, plan a longer walk or choose a shorter themed tour.

Explore Brühl on foot: three tours, different highlights

The Brühl Book Route is a 10.8-kilometre Actionbound adventure tour. It links book-lending cabinets around Brühl and shares interesting facts about the history of the town’s districts. Audio tracks and puzzles give the route an interactive feel. It can be flexibly divided into three stages of three kilometres each. The route therefore combines a longer overall distance with the option of tackling it in stages. Its main focus is the history of the districts and the challenges along the way.

The approximately 12-kilometre Mill Tour is a circular walking route through Brühl. It starts and ends in the palace park. Of the three tours described here, it is the longest; its circular route has a clearly defined shape, with the same start and end point. The Brühl Art Walk offers a different focus: this interactive Actionbound art tour is 3.1 kilometres long and leads through the historic town centre. It starts at the “Brühl-Mitte” stop in the direction of Bonn. Compared with the Mill Tour, it is much shorter and focuses on art, while the Book Route combines local history, audio tracks and puzzles. The distance and theme offer two practical points of reference when choosing a tour.

By bike and through the gardens

Brühl also has something for cyclists: the town connects directly to the well-signposted junction network of the Rhineland Cycling Region. Before setting off on a bike tour, check the network’s current route, as details of the official cycle network may change over time. Alongside the walking tours described above, the junction network offers another option to consider when planning.

The gardens of Augustusburg Palace offer a different focus. They are among the few gardens in Europe to have been restored according to their original plans. Since 1984, Augustusburg Palace in Brühl, together with Falkenlust Palace and the Brühl gardens, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Brühl thus brings together different themes for a visit: interactive routes through its districts and town centre on the one hand, and garden and palace history on the other.

More experiences in Brühl

A GPS treasure hunt is offered at Schwindelfrei Adventure Forest. A booking request is required, so allow for this step before making firm plans to take part. The Adventure Trail at Phantasialand is located in the Deep in Africa themed area. Both experiences offer a different focus from the walking and cycling tours: the emphasis here is on a treasure hunt or an attraction within a themed area.

More to explore in the Rhein-Erft district

Beyond Brühl, the wider Rhein-Erft district offers other distinct cultural and nature-related experiences. At the BERGHEIMAT Museum, the history of Bergheim is brought to life through audio and hands-on stations and a small museum cinema; permanent and temporary exhibitions make up the museum programme. The KERAMION in Frechen houses collections of modern and historic ceramics. The two museums therefore have different focuses: local history in Bergheim and ceramics in Frechen.

Nature and outdoor activities are also part of what the Rhein-Erft district has to offer. The Friesheimer Busch Environmental and Nature Park Centre in Erftstadt provides practical and theoretical nature conservation work, as well as education for sustainable development. At the Gymnicher Mühle Nature Park Centre, you can explore the Erftaue landscape park on foot; course participants can use professional baking equipment at the on-site teaching bakery and create their own small baked works of art. The Rhein-Erft district also offers hiking, cycling and water sports, including a dedicated cycle route linking moated castles. Castles, palaces, museums and historic mills are among the region’s other attractions.
