The Jesuit Church of “Maria Immaculata” and the mills in the Almeauen provide a common thread through Büren’s Baroque heritage and technological history. There are also park paths, a circular cycling route and museums offering very different glimpses into the lives of earlier generations. To help plan your visit, you can organize the options by interest: architecture, historical working processes, school life or local history.

Baroque Architecture and Büren’s History

The Jesuit Church of “Maria Immaculata” in Büren’s town centre is considered one of the most magnificent Baroque works in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was built in the late Baroque style from 1754 to 1773, based on plans by Franz Heinrich Roth. Its location, construction period and architectural style offer a concrete introduction to Büren’s architectural heritage.

The ruins of Ringelstein Castle in Harth offer a different perspective on history. During the Thirty Years’ War, they were the scene of numerous witch trials and served as a court of the Lordship of Büren. Evidence of these trials can be found in the Witches’ Cellar, which is part of the ruins. The sacred architecture and castle ruins thus represent different historical themes: Baroque architecture on the one hand, and the history of courts and trials on the other.

Mills and Paths Through the Almeauen

The Mittel and Bohr mills are located in the Almeauen, by the Mühlengraben, along the old town wall and within sight of the Jesuit Church. Today, they are an “interactive museum” for visitors of all ages. On public tours, you can learn more about the history of the mill and the practical workings of an old stone mill; these processes are also demonstrated. During the summer months, tours of around 60 minutes take place regularly. Months with special events are excluded. As tours are seasonal, it is advisable to check the tour date before your visit.

The Almeauen form an extensive park landscape with circular walking trails, a nature trail and a Nordic walking course. For a cycling trip, the Auen Cycle Route starts at the Jesuit Church and follows a 44-kilometre circular route. This gives you a choice of different ways to get active: paths through the park landscape and a designated longer cycling route. The church is therefore not only a destination for architecture enthusiasts, but also the starting point for the circular cycling route.

Museums: School Life and Club History

The Bernhard Wolff School Museum of the City of Büren showcases school life during the Kaiser era through furniture, pictures, documents and posters. Its centrepiece is a classroom from around the turn of the century. Visitors can write on slates with a slate pencil. The exhibition thus combines historical objects and documents with a hands-on activity from everyday school life.

The St. Sebastian Brotherhood of Büren’s Marksmen’s Museum is located in the Eulenturm on the eastern wall of the town fortifications. Its two floors display old documents, everyday objects, uniforms and flags. Alongside the school museum, it offers a different focus: instead of classrooms and lessons, it centres on the history of the brotherhood and the objects it has preserved.

Wewelsburg: Castle Architecture and Regional History

Wewelsburg is located in the district of the same name within the city of Büren. It was built from 1603 to 1609 as a triangular castle in the Weser Renaissance style. It houses a museum on the history of the former Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn. Across 29 rooms, the history of the Paderborn region is presented from the earliest settlements to secularization in 1802. Here, you can encounter both a clearly defined example of castle architecture and an exhibition covering a broad span of history.

Bus routes S61, Sk1 and 461 stop in Wewelsburg. The S61 express bus runs regularly from Paderborn Central Station towards the airport, serving the “Schule” stop in Büren-Wewelsburg. Check the current timetable details before travelling. When choosing what to see in Büren, the different themes can help you decide: church architecture, mill history, school and club life, or the history of the Paderborn region.
