Elspe between Festival and Pilgrimage Route

Elspe offers a range of reasons to visit: in summer, Elspe Festival stages the Karl May Festival; there are also pilgrimage routes, a circular hiking trail through a nature reserve, and viewpoints. When planning your trip, first decide whether the festival date, a particular route or the scenery should be the main focus. This also makes it easier to find a holiday apartment, as you can choose your travel dates to fit the activities you have in mind. The seasonal nature of the festival differs from the routes, for which the starting point and distance are useful factors when planning.

Church and Pilgrimage Routes

The parish church of St. James the Elder in Elspe is located directly on the HeidenstraĂźe and the Roman Road. A church stood in Elspe before the year 1000, probably as early as the 9th century. The St. Clare of Assisi Way starts at the Church of St. James the Elder and is about 8 km long. The Sauerland Camino follows a different route: as part of the European Way of St. James, it runs from Korbach/Marsberg to Meinerzhagen, passing directly through Elspe. This distinguishes a route that starts in Elspe from a Camino section that passes through the town. Pilgrim stamps are available at the parish church before and after Mass. If you plan to collect a stamp, check the Mass times and arrange your visit accordingly.

Two Hiking Routes of Different Lengths

The 4.2 km A13 circular hiking trail runs along the Fröndenberg and through the “Melbecke and Rübenkamp” nature reserve. The “Circular Hiking Tip around Elspe” starts at the Kirchloh hiking car park and is around 12.5 km long. A13 is therefore the shorter of the two routes mentioned. As well as their different lengths, the routes differ in their connection to the Fröndenberg and the nature reserve, and in the clearly stated starting point at Kirchloh. This lets you take both the distance and starting point into account when choosing a route.

Views and Other Routes

The Wallburg Tower is an observation tower near Lennestadt-Elspe, on the 481 m-high Weilenscheid. Built entirely of wood in 1997, the 14.50 m-high tower has an observation platform that you can reach by climbing 60 steps. The Vitus Chapel offers wonderful views across the Elspetal valley. At the tower, the steps are part of the climb to the platform; at the chapel, the main attraction is the view across the valley. Another route option is the Lennestadt Tour, which follows the Lenne to Elspe and then back to Altenhundem. For this tour, the river and the named places offer different points of reference from the distances or starting points of the hiking routes.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Priorities

A short stay can be planned around one main activity. If you are visiting for the Karl May Festival, first check the specific summer date and then set your travel dates. For a trip focused on pilgrimage or hiking, the route, its length or its starting point can instead shape your plans. If you are staying for several days, you can plan a scheduled event and a day on the trails separately, choosing a route to suit the distance you want to cover.
