Lennestadt can be explored through three distinct interests: cycling, hiking and cultural and historical sites. The SauerlandRadring, the range of hiking opportunities and traces of the past each give a stay a different focus. Considering these differences before your trip can help you choose excursions deliberately, rather than trying to fit every theme into the same day’s itinerary.

Cycling on the SauerlandRadring

Lennestadt is one of the four main towns on the SauerlandRadring. Cycling routes follow rivers or former railway lines. These routes provide a practical starting point when choosing where to ride: you can consider whether you prefer routes along rivers or former railway lines. The cycling network is numbered throughout according to the “Radeln nach Zahlen” system, providing guidance for planning your own tours. The SauerlandRadring can be reached by public transport from the Grevenbrück and Altenhundem railway stations. Check connections before your trip if you plan to use this option.

Hiking trails and outdoor activities

Lennestadt is part of the Sauerland Hiking Villages, a certified quality region under the “Wanderbares Deutschland” hiking initiative. The hiking trail network is marked and clearly signposted. The hiking opportunities presented jointly for Lennestadt and Kirchhundem include long-distance trails, themed paths and nature trails. There are different types of routes to choose from: you can look for a longer hiking route, a particular theme or a nature trail. Activities at Hohe Bracht include hiking, walks, cycling and winter sports; conditions for winter sports depend on the season.

Peperburg and the region’s history

Peperburg is a castle ruin in GrevenbrĂĽck, within the Breiter Hagen nature reserve. It was the oldest seat of power in the eastern SĂĽdsauerland region. It was in use from the first half of the 12th century until the final decades of the 13th century. Only the foundations of the southern section of the castle remain. The limestone quarry next to Peperburg is associated with the Sauerland-Seelenorte.

The caves near Grevenbrück also offer a glimpse into a much earlier period: they contain the oldest known traces of human activity in the Lennestadt area. The permanent exhibition “43/1 – Einheit in Vielfalt” at the Museum of the City of Lennestadt presents the history of Lennestadt and its surroundings. Its content may evolve over time. Together, these places offer different historical perspectives, from early traces of human activity to the medieval history of Peperburg and the region’s past as presented in the exhibition.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for hotels in Lennestadt, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: cycling, hiking or history. A short stay does not need to cover every theme. With a clear priority, you can spread activities across your days and make time for breaks.
