For planning a trip to Fenke, two distinct themes are worth considering: the features of the quarries and the marked “Around Lindlar” circular hiking trail. The trail is also suitable for a bike ride. Details about the quarry sites and the route give you concrete points of reference for planning your stay around the landscape and activities.

The Fenke 1, 2 and 3 quarries

Fenke 1 is a small, filled-in and levelled quarry measuring approximately 30 × 20 metres. Fenke 2 measures 50 × 20 metres. At 150 × 35 metres, Fenke 3 is significantly larger; a newer path divides it into two areas. The three quarries therefore differ not only in size, but also in their present-day appearance.

At Fenke 3 in particular, the quarry face remains a defining feature: it still runs along the slope, rising to a height of about five metres. Fill and spoil heaps interrupt it in several places. When considering the traces of quarrying, you can take into account both the measurements and the site’s described features.

Circular trail on foot or by bike

The “Around Lindlar” circular hiking trail is marked along its entire route with a black “L” on a white background. It runs mostly along attractive, well-maintained forest paths; there are relatively few singletrack sections. The trail conditions are therefore a useful guide when planning a bike ride or assessing the route’s character in advance.

One possible starting point is the car park on Wiesenstraße in Fenke. From there, follow Neuefelder Straße and Wolfskuhl Street to reach the signed trail. If you want to use this starting point, follow the named streets and the trail signs.

Celebrations in Fenke

The Rot-Weiß Fenke 1964 e.V. carnival club makes its clubhouse available for celebrations, with a straightforward and flexible arrangement. If you are planning a celebration, it is best to confirm current availability in advance.

Lindlar: parks and quarry attractions

Lindlar Recreation Park is a public park covering 5.6 hectares. An accessible network of walking paths runs alongside a pond. The park also has an adventure playground with a tyre swing, slide, zip line and climbing castle. The park and its paths offer a distinct focus in Lindlar, quite different from the quarries and circular trail around Fenke.

Lindlar is also home to the 6.2-kilometre Steinhauerpfad circular hiking trail, Bergischer Streifzug No. 8. Guided hikes provide background information on quarries, greywacke and the oldest forest in the world. A total of eight information boards and two audio stations complement the trail. If you are planning a guided hike, check the dates and booking conditions in advance.

Fossil hunting also takes place in the quarries around Lindlar: visitors can search large blocks of stone with a hammer and chisel for fossils millions of years old. The activity is available daily from April through October, except Sundays and public holidays, and is intended for groups and families. Check the dates and booking conditions for your visit before making plans.
