Rischenau offers two distinct insights into its history: historic mill technology and local history at the Paradiesmühle, as well as preserved buildings from the former estate in the Biesterfeld area. Its cultural character thus ranges from the use of a mill to traces of former manor buildings. Which of these topics interests you most can shape how you see the place.

Mill Museum and Refreshments at the Paradiesmühle

The Paradiesmühle stands on the edge of Rischenau. It preserves historic mill technology and is both a mill museum and a private local history museum. The latter focuses on Rischenau and the former County of Lippe-Biesterfeld. The history of technology and local history therefore sit side by side here: the mill preserves not only its historic technology but also explores the history of the place and the former county.

The complex also includes a restaurant, a café and an inn. The menu includes food and drinks as well as homemade cakes and tortes. In this way, the Paradiesmühle combines its museum theme with dining in one place. For travel planning, this is a special combination: mill technology, local history and refreshments are different aspects of the same destination.

Buildings from the Former Estate in Biesterfeld

Three buildings from the former estate have been preserved in the Biesterfeld area of Rischenau: the former forester’s house, the maids’ house and the partially preserved brewery and distillery building. After a fire, the latter was later converted into a riding hall. The three buildings represent different former uses. The brewery and distillery building in particular also reveals a change in use: the fire was followed by its conversion into a riding hall, while parts of the building remained.

Herb Activities from April to October

Guided herb walks and herb workshops are offered seasonally at the Paradiesmühle from April to October. Group packages are available on request. If you would like to include a particular tour or group activity in your plans, it is best to confirm the date and arrangements in advance. The seasonal period provides a clear indication of when to travel.

Getting There by Public Transport

The Paradiesmühle is said to be accessible via the Bad Pyrmont or Lügde S-Bahn stations and the Rischenau “Alte Post” bus stop. Bus routes 595, 760, 761, 762 and 774 serve the stop. As routes may change, check connections before travelling.

More Cultural Attractions and Walking Routes in the Wider Destination of Lügde

Lügde has its own distinctive historic town centre: its approximately 1,500-metre-long town wall is completely intact and surrounds the entire historic town centre. It was part of the former town fortifications and served to protect against flooding. The historic townscape also includes defensive towers and half-timbered houses. The Dechenheim is located in the city’s former fire station. St. Kilian’s Church is a Romanesque church built around 1150, before the town was founded; it is considered a landmark of Lügde and is one of Westphalia’s oldest architectural monuments.

Emmerauenpark lies on the edge of Lügde’s historic old town. It has an adventure playground, the “Ankerplatz” café with a beer garden, and “Emmer Beach” with swimming and beach areas. All paths in the park are suitable for wheelchairs. We recommend checking which facilities are open seasonally before planning your visit.

For a walk through the town centre, the short town tour is an easy 2.62-kilometre circular route. The similarly easy Klosterweg Falkenhagen quality trail is longer at 4.90 kilometres and starts and ends at Falkenhagen Monastery. Comparing the route lengths can help you choose how much time to allow; check the route details before setting off.
