Vörden was fortified in the early 14th century; today, local history and leisure activities are distinct areas of interest. You can explore the historic buildings and how they came about, or consider the local activities when planning your stay.

Fortifications, Tower and Churches

To protect Marienmünster Abbey, Vörden was fortified in the early 14th century with a castle, walls, a rampart and a moat. Construction of the fortifications took five years. The observation and museum tower was built in 2008. Its viewing platform is 21 metres high; excluding the symbolic signal mast, the tower is about 26 metres tall. These two measurements therefore refer to different points: the height of the platform and the total height of the tower without the signal mast. Several centuries separate the medieval fortifications from the observation tower built in 2008.

The Hungerberg Chapel of “Our Lady of Sorrows” was built in 1852 using the massive exterior walls of the former telegraph station building. The Stations of the Cross leading to Hungerberg were laid out in 1857 with 14 stations. Vörden’s present-day St. Kilian’s Church also has a specific date: it was consecrated in 1901. Together, these construction and dating histories offer several points of entry for exploring Vörden’s past. The church was consecrated 44 years after the Stations of the Cross were laid out.

Cycling Routes and Leisure Activities in Town

The R1 European Cycle Route passes through the main town of Marienmünster-Vörden. Another cycling tour is called “Cycling around Marienmünster – Around the Abbey”; it follows existing cycle paths and has no dedicated waymarking. This is important to know for navigation if you are planning this particular tour. The description of the R1, in turn, specifies its route through the main town.

Local leisure activities include a landscaped leisure park with an adventure playground, a nature trail, an orchard, a mini-golf course, a small recreational lake and a Kneipp foot-treading pool. The adventure playground at Hungerplatz features a rocky castle, water play features and a climbing pyramid. The range of activities for a stay therefore includes options from nature and water activities to play and exercise.

The indoor leisure pool in Vörden has a paddling pool and a swimming pool, as well as a Roman steam bath, a whirlpool, a large sauna area and an expansive sunbathing lawn. If you are planning a visit, check the latest information about the indoor pool beforehand.

Orchards and Marienmünster

Around Vörden, the orchard group looks after 10 hectares of traditional orchards with more than 1,000 fruit trees. The orchard theme adds a landscape perspective to the town’s history.

In the wider destination of Marienmünster, the former Benedictine abbey offers a distinct cultural highlight. It preserves sacred art treasures, including Baroque structures dating from 1683 to 1685. High-calibre concerts are regularly held in the abbey church and the concert halls of Marienmünster Monastery.
