Marienmünster offers several distinct highlights for a stay: sacred art and monastic history at the former Benedictine abbey, themed trails devoted to wood and fruit orchards, and longer hiking and cycling routes. You can choose among the various options according to your interests, without having to follow a set itinerary.

Monastic Culture and Places of Learning

The former Benedictine Abbey of Marienmünster preserves sacred art treasures, including Baroque structures dating from 1683 to 1685. Regular high-caliber concerts are held in the abbey church and the monastery's concert halls. If you plan to attend a concert, check the current program.

The abbey also has a visitor center where you can learn about the monasteries of the region through multimedia exhibits. A map projected onto the floor enables interactive animations and information films. The abbey garden shows which plants monasteries used for their meals and which they used to alleviate ailments. This places monastic knowledge and everyday life alongside the architecture.

In the woods near the abbey church, a statue of the Virgin Mary stands on a tall, masonry plinth built of rubble stone. It was erected as a pilgrimage site for devotion to the Virgin Mary at the request of many visitors and pilgrimage groups. The ecumenical pilgrimage trail “Path of Silence” offers a different perspective on the subject: it begins in medieval Schwalenberg, runs for about 41 kilometers through the landscapes of the town of Marienmünster, and continues to the banks of the Weser.

Themed Trails, Hikes, and Cycling Routes

The approximately one-kilometer-long Wood themed trail at Marienmünster Abbey is designed to be accessible. Its eleven stations illustrate the role of beech and oak trees in monastic life. The GPS and orchard educational trail in Marienmünster-Vörden is aimed primarily at young people and families with children. Seven stations offer information, short quizzes, and other activities related to fruit orchards.

Marienmünster has 130 kilometers of marked hiking trails and numerous cycling routes. The EuroVelo Route R1 passes through the municipal area; its long-distance route runs from the Netherlands through Germany and Poland toward the Baltic states and Saint Petersburg. The Wellness Route, which connects health resorts in East Westphalia, also passes through the municipal area. The “Path of Silence” pilgrimage trail offers a distinct alternative: it connects the starting point in Schwalenberg with the banks of the Weser, passing through the landscapes of Marienmünster along the way.

Vörden and Altenbergen

In Vörden, the indoor leisure pool offers a Roman steam bath, a whirlpool, a large sauna area, a paddling pool, a swimming pool, and a spacious sunbathing lawn. Check the latest operating information before your visit. In Altenbergen, the historic windmill is a prominent technical monument and the largest surviving monument of its kind in the region. These places complement the focus on the abbey with other independent destinations within Marienmünster.

The Wider Region: Höxter

As a broader travel destination, the district of Höxter combines culture, nature, and active holidays in the hilly low mountain landscapes of the Teutoburg Forest and the Weser Uplands. One regional cycling route starting in Marienmünster is the Monastery Garden Route: it begins at the former Benedictine abbey. Within the district of Höxter, it is about 315 kilometers long and can be cycled in five stages of 52 to 67 kilometers each. For a longer tour, it is advisable to check current route conditions in advance.
