The town center of Beverungen lies directly on the Weser, nestled in a broad valley basin and surrounded by densely wooded hills reaching up to 360 meters above sea level. Historic buildings, an annual carnival tradition celebrated jointly, and trails of varying lengths give your stay several points of focus. Depending on whether you prefer culture, hiking or cycling, you can plan your time in Beverungen accordingly.

Buildings, crafts and traditions

Sights in Beverungen include the Cordt-Holstein-Haus and the Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist. The house was built in 1662 and the church in 1698. The two dates are 36 years apart and mark specific points in the 17th century. A residential tower at Beverungen Castle is also considered a landmark of the town.

In the municipality of Beverungen, the Dalhausen Basketmaker Museum occupies two floors and offers information about the history of basketmaking, the materials required and the products made. The museum opened in 1994. Its subject therefore ranges from the history of the craft and the materials used to the finished products.

The annual carnival is another cultural highlight: it is celebrated jointly across state lines with Lauenförde, under the direction of the Weserbrücke Carnival Association. If carnival is a key reason for your trip, check the relevant festival dates before planning.

Hiking and cycling in Beverungen

The hiking trails can be clearly compared by distance: the “Where the goat becomes the gardener” quality hiking trail in Beverungen is 13 kilometers long, while the Weser-Bever Höhenweg is 33 kilometers long. The latter is therefore more than twice as long; these figures provide an initial basis for comparing routes by distance.

Beverungen is very easy to reach via the Weser Cycle Route, a popular long-distance cycling route in Germany. Many routes are part of North Rhine-Westphalia’s cycling network and are signposted accordingly. Before setting out on a particular ride, it is advisable to check seasonal trail conditions.

Children’s rally and guided town tour

The “Children’s Rally” on the Beverungen town walk is aimed at children. Following the beaver’s tracks, it takes them on a short excursion around Beverungen, with puzzles and discoveries along the way.

The guided town tour “Beverungen – Then and Now” for groups lasts about 60 minutes and can be booked year-round. If you plan to take the tour, confirm its availability before your trip.

The wider Höxter travel destination

In the wider Höxter travel destination, Höxter district brings together culture, nature and active holidays in the hilly uplands of the Teutoburg Forest and the Weser Uplands. One regional cycling route is the 65-kilometer Nethe Cycle Route: it follows the Nethe from its source to its mouth at the Weser and runs between Bad Driburg and Höxter.

The Kloster-Garten-Route is also in the wider Höxter travel destination. It is about 315 kilometers long, starts at Marienmünster Abbey and can be cycled in five stages of 52 to 67 kilometers each. Along the route, 28 Bible markers make it a pilgrimage tour. The Nethe Cycle Route’s 65 kilometers contrast with the Kloster-Garten-Route’s approximately 315 kilometers—two very different distances to consider when planning a regional cycling trip. If planning a specific tour, check current trail conditions.
