Bad Fredeburg offers a variety of options for a stay: local history, forest trails, disc golf and a Kneipp spa. This mix lets you get to know the town in a way that suits your interests, whether culturally, actively or with a focus on relaxation.
Townscape and local history
Slate, lovingly restored half-timbered houses and charming front gardens shape the townscape of Bad Fredeburg. The historic town tour starts at the Tourist Information Office in the Bad Fredeburg spa house and focuses on local history. You can explore the town with its buildings in mind or choose a tour with a historical focus.
The Bad Fredeburg Court Museum displays items from the history of the justice system: a prison cell with its original furnishings, a historic judge’s chair, old office furnishings and a library. The meeting point for a guided tour was the courthouse at Im Ohle 6. Registration with the Bad Fredeburg Tourist Information Office by 2:00 pm on Thursday was required; admission was free. Check current dates and arrangements before your trip.
Trails in Bad Fredeburg and the Schmallenberg destination
The Bad Fredeburg terrain therapy trail network starts at the church square. The Bad Fredeburg forest adventure trail is a hiking trail of about 4 km through the local forest. The wider Schmallenberg destination also has a family adventure trail of about 3 km, with 13 stops covering forests, animals, wood and birds. The approximate distances and different types of trails offer two distinct options: a forest hiking trail in Bad Fredeburg or a themed adventure trail in Schmallenberg.
The Forestry Workers’ Museum in Schmallenberg-Latrop offers another regional point of interest. It displays historic tools, images of life in the forest and village in earlier times, historic forestry records, and information about the development of the chainsaw. The two museums have different focuses: the Court Museum in Bad Fredeburg is devoted to the history of the justice system, while the Forestry Workers’ Museum in Schmallenberg-Latrop focuses on forest and village history.
Disc golf and swimming
The disc golf course in Bad Fredeburg has 18 baskets and is located at the Kurpark in Schmiedinghausen. Its challenging course runs through very hilly, wooded terrain; sturdy footwear is recommended. The terrain is an important difference from the forest trails: if you want to play disc golf, take the footwear recommendation for this course into account.
The SauerlandBAD in Bad Fredeburg offers a leisure pool, whirlpools, a Kneipp wading pool, and the “Magic-Eye” and “Turbo-Rutsche” slides. Bad Fredeburg is officially recognised as a Kneipp spa and is a health resort with therapeutic mine treatments. Alongside the trails and local history, swimming and Kneipp activities are additional options for your trip.
Bus connections and trip planning
The S90 leisure bus connects Meschede, Bödefeld, Bad Fredeburg and Schmallenberg. On Sundays and public holidays from late April to late October, it carries bicycles on a bicycle trailer. Bicycle transport is therefore limited to these days and this seasonal period; check the current timetable for your specific trip. This allows you to factor the bus connection into your plans without assuming that bicycles can be carried year-round.
Whether you’re drawn by a forest trail, local history, disc golf or swimming, Bad Fredeburg offers a range of interests without requiring you to combine them into a single day’s itinerary. For your stay, you can choose the options that suit your trip and consider the regional attractions in Schmallenberg as a separate addition.
