Neheim-Hüsten offers a range of ways to explore during a stay: church and local history, several places associated with Franz Stock, paths and facilities for exercise, as well as market and event dates. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between these topics: some are tied to particular days or a season, while others mainly require checking current access or trail conditions.
Churches, local history and Franz Stock
St. Petri in Hüsten can be viewed through the lens of its different periods of construction. The history of the church site goes back to the 9th century; the core of the tower dates from the 12th century. Apart from the older tower, the current church building was constructed in the 1860s. The interior is furnished in the Neo-Gothic style and has a side entrance. If you would like to visit the interior, check access in advance.
In Neheim, the Möhnepforte leads into a different historical period: it is the oldest street name in the town and was first mentioned in a document in 1350. In the Middle Ages, the Fresekenhof was a castle guard’s house that secured the town gate leading to the Ruhr bridge. The present-day building dates from 1680. Burghaus Gransau and the Drostenhof are also part of the town’s fortifications. The Fresekenhof houses a permanent exhibition about Franz Stock, his life and work, and their impact on German-French understanding. Check opening hours before your visit. The Fresekenhof is centrally located in Arnsberg-Neheim and is easy to reach by public transport.
Several places highlight different aspects of Franz Stock’s life. In the basement of the Stock family home, a memorial site displays furniture and objects from his Paris apartment. It also includes pictures and books by Franz Stock, as well as an archive of letters, photographs and documents. St. Johannes Baptist in Neheim is his home church: he was baptized there and celebrated his first Mass there. The exhibition, memorial site and church are therefore different places where you can focus on his biography.
Paths and outdoor activities
The Hüsten Freedom Trail starts and ends at St. Petri Church and can also be walked in sections. This lets you choose between the entire route and individual sections, without having to assume a particular walking time. At the Möhnepforte, walkers, hikers and cyclists cross a wooden bridge. The Ruhr Valley Cycle Route is a few hundred meters away. The bridge and cycle route are two practical landmarks to help with planning; current trail conditions may change.
The Große Wiese saltwater sports park in Hüsten brings together a range of facilities on one site: these include a network of paths, a 40-meter-long, 8-meter-high graduation tower, saltwater bubblers and spring discs. Seating areas, a playground, a Finnish track and a Kneipp facility complete the amenities. This lets you choose between paths, facilities for exercise and places to relax, rather than planning your time outdoors around just one type of activity.
Market, fair and outdoor pool
The weekly market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the market square in Neheim. Fresh regional produce is offered at more than 50 stalls. If you want the market to be a set part of your visit, check for possible changes on public holidays. The Hüsten fair is a tradition dating back more than 1,000 years and takes place in September; check the dates for the relevant year before your trip.
The Neheim outdoor pool also combines a specific historical connection with seasonal planning. It first opened on June 19, 1926, and has since been part of the town’s sports and leisure culture. Its pool has a combined section for swimmers and non-swimmers. As opening schedules may vary by season, check the current operating hours if you plan to visit.
Before finalizing your plans, check event dates, seasonal operating schedules, access to indoor spaces and current trail conditions.
