In Herdringen, open-air theater and local history meet routes through the village and countryside. The X1 hiking trail, also known as the Plackweg, passes through Herdringen and runs in the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. When planning a trip, you can combine a cultural program with time outdoors without treating the different paths as a single route.
Exploring on Foot and by Bike
The Herdringen Panorama Trail runs around the village. Marked feeder paths identified by the letter “h” lead from the village center onto the trail. As local signage and maintenance should be checked, it is a good idea to review the trail information before setting out. The Heinrich Knoche educational trail offers another short circular walk: it is about 500 meters long and passes seven information stations about Heinrich Knoche’s life. The route may be updated; check the latest information before your walk.
There is also a specific connection for a bike ride: the 3-Monastery Cycling Tour passes through the castle park in Herdringen on its way to Oelinghausen Monastery. You can think of the route as an excursion to the monastery; this does not imply a specific travel time or additional sections of the route.
Open-Air Theater Throughout the Year
The Herdringen Open-Air Theater stages performances every year from the end of May until the first days of September. Open-air theater has been performed at its current location every year since 1954; the first season opened with Friedrich Schiller’s production of “William Tell.” The program includes fairy tales for children and comedies for adults. The plays staged vary from season to season, so check the current performance schedule when planning a visit.
Heinrich Knoche and Local History
The educational trail is dedicated to Heinrich Knoche, who lived from 1831 to 1911 and is regarded as a pioneer of modern arithmetic instruction. He taught at the Herdringen elementary school from 1852 to 1892. The Old School also commemorates the teacher and arithmetic master. The trail’s stations thus focus on an individual, while the village’s history can also be seen in other buildings and places of remembrance.
Sammelmanns Hof is considered the oldest farm in Herdringen; its history can be traced back to 1202. The listed Kneers Speicher was built around 1700 and stands at the intersection of Ostentor and Habbeler Weg. The Antonius Häuschen is located at the corner of Krähenbrink and Telgenweg: the Storm brothers built it in 1713 as a small religious monument honoring Saint Anthony of Padua. These places tell different chapters of local history, from the farm and granary to the religious monument.
Castle, Church and Living Traditions
Herdringen Castle is a historic manor. The present-day castle was built to designs by Ernst Friedrich Zwirner between 1844 and 1853; the castle chapel recalls his work on Cologne Cathedral. The castle is currently open by prior arrangement only. The English landscape park was laid out on a grand scale in the 1840s. The architectural history and landscape design thus remain distinct aspects of the castle ensemble.
When St. Antonius and St. Vitus Church in Herdringen was redesigned in 2006, the altar was placed on an elliptically curved altar island in the center of the congregation. The old part of the church is used for baptisms, meditation and exhibitions; specific exhibition dates may change. Most of the half-timbered houses near the church are listed buildings. Local traditions also include the marksmen’s festivals, which are celebrated as major village events. Exact festival dates and programs vary.
Oelinghausen Monastery in the Wider Arnsberg Destination
Oelinghausen Monastery is part of the wider Arnsberg destination and is the destination of the 3-Monastery Cycling Tour via the castle park. The monastery is a pilgrimage site that attracts many thousands of visitors. The nave features rich Baroque furnishings created in 1712 by the sculptor Wilhelm Spliethoven, known as Pater, from Volbringen. The collection also includes medieval depictions of the Cross dating from 1150, 1270 and 1380, as well as a Romanesque Madonna figure from around 1200. This stop complements the local perspective with Arnsberg’s own artistic and pilgrimage history.
