The wild yellow daffodil meadows of the upper Olef Valley give a hike near Hollerath a clear seasonal focus. Two signposted circular routes pass through this landscape; the municipality of Hellenthal also offers a larger network of trails. When planning, it is important to consider the approximate blooming season and the route layout of your chosen trail.

Daffodil bloom in the upper Olef Valley

In the North Eifel Nature Park, the daffodil meadows bloom every year from approximately late March to early May. This time frame is a guide, not a fixed bloom date: the timing depends on the weather. If the daffodils are the reason for your trip, plan your stay within this period and keep the exact date flexible. A visit at the start of the period may therefore be different from one near the end; the seasonal information describes a range, not a specific stage of flowering. If the stage of bloom is decisive for your trip, it is worth checking the current blooms shortly before your visit.

Two circular routes at Hollerather Knie

Both circular routes start at the Hollerather Knie car park on the B265. They are signposted and can be walked independently or with an expert guide. This gives you two marked options for exploring the daffodil landscape, both with the same starting point. Choosing between walking independently and going with a guide affects the type of tour; the connection to the meadows remains the same. As circular routes, they give your outing a clear structure while sharing the same starting point.

Hikes with different focuses

Hellenthal has more than 220 km of marked hiking trails in total. This figure refers to the municipality and covers a larger area than the two loops at Hollerather Knie. Route III offers a different thematic focus: it is centred on geology and mining history. The routes therefore have different points of interest: the circular routes pass through the seasonal daffodil landscape, while Route III is a themed hike about geology and mining history. When choosing, you can decide whether to focus first on the natural spectacle of the blooms or on geology and mining history.

Check diversions carefully

When checking diversions, be sure to distinguish between trail names and time periods. The red trail currently has a signposted diversion due to wind farm construction; construction is scheduled from March 2026 until approximately April 2028. Route III is also diverted in the Hollerath area due to wind farm construction; here, construction is scheduled from February 2026 until approximately spring 2028. The diversion notices apply to the specific trails named and cover different time periods. Before setting out, check the route for your chosen trail. It is especially worth checking again if you plan to visit after the approximate end dates given.
