Rohren combines a history of craftsmanship with forest trails and nature topics. A walk through the village passes a memorial stone dating from 1724 and a replica of a historic draw well; at Perdsley, the views and wildlife are the main attractions. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these highlights may influence your choice: are you particularly interested in local history, trails or landscapes?

Village History and Craftsmanship

The walk through Rohren passes the parish church, a preserved memorial stone dating from 1724 and a replica of a historic draw well. The history of the village also includes St. Cornelius Church: it was rebuilt between 1864 and 1867 and consecrated on 24 September 1870. The construction period and the later consecration date mark two distinct historical milestones.

At the historic sawmill, logs are cut lengthwise into planks by the rhythmic up-and-down motion of a saw frame. This illustrates a specific woodworking process and adds a craft theme to the impressions gained on the village walk.

Forest Trails and Different Routes

The Rohren forest trail is signposted from the village centre. Its features include a demonstration charcoal kiln built from stacked wood and a historic sawmill. Circular hiking route 57 follows a different course: it leads from the hiking car park by the church in Rohren through the Kuckbach Valley to the historic sawmill. Along the way, there are quiet trails, expansive views and short climbs with scenic outlooks. This means a nature trail with specific stops and a circular hiking route with a named course offer two distinct options.

Perdsley and Nature

From the “Perdsley” Eifel Viewpoint in Monschau-Rohren, at around 400 metres above sea level, the view stretches towards Monschau and into the Rur Valley. Kingfishers and white-throated dippers are still found in the Perdsley area; many rare and protected animal and plant species have also been preserved there. The forest museum at Kluckbachhütte displays more than 200 exhibits on water, forests and wildlife. The nature theme thus ranges from views across the valley to wildlife and plants, as well as the subjects covered by the museum.

Plan Your Season and Journey

The “Where the Sawmill Thumps” hike is 3.8 kilometres long. The 3.2-kilometre meadow cross-country ski trail is available when snow conditions are suitable. These route lengths refer to different activities; for the ski trail, snow conditions are an additional factor to consider when planning. Check in advance whether snow conditions are suitable. The “Monschau, Rohren Leykaulstraße” bus stop is near the starting point and is served by route 84. Check current timetables separately.

Monschau: Old Town, Craftsmanship and Cycling Route

In Monschau, circular route 15 is a self-guided way to explore the old town. The Red House was built in 1760 by textile manufacturer Johann Heinrich Scheibler as a residence and business premises. Together with the half-timbered façades along the Rur and the castle, it is one of the town’s landmarks. At the Monschau Glassworks, visitors can watch glassblowers shape vessels or glass figures from molten glass. The “Monschauer-Land-Route” cycle tour also passes through the cloth-making town of Monschau. These old-town, architecture and craftsmanship highlights are all in Monschau.
