Steling gives Mützenich a distinctive elevation landmark: it lies 658 metres above sea level and is the highest elevation in the Aachen city region. It is also the highest point of the second stage of the Eifelsteig trail. For hikers, it is therefore a specific feature of the landscape and a reference point on the long-distance trail.

From the “Im Brand” hiking car park in Monschau-Mützenich, follow the “Steling” signs to Steling. If you want to make a specific plan to visit this high point, you can use this named car park and the signposted route as your guide.

Hiking and cycling with different points of interest

The 11.4-kilometre circular hiking trail 36 starts at the village square in Mützenich, follows part of the Eifelsteig and leads to the edge of the Mützenich Fen. The route includes a picnic area at the former German-Belgian customs station. Near Mützenich, hiking route 36 passes very close to Reichenstein Monastery, a 12th-century building, and then reaches the Vennbahn, a cycling route.

For a second option focused on cycling, the Vennbahn-Rur Route runs through Mützenich on a bike tour between Monschau and Sourbrodt. The specific details therefore differ: circular trail 36 has a stated length and starting point in the village, while the Vennbahn-Rur Route is described by the two named places and its course through Mützenich.

Another point of interest is Kaiser Karls Bettstatt in the High Fens. The rock lies near Mützenich, right on the German-Belgian border, and is now a popular picnic spot, especially with hikers. There is a small shelter and several places to sit around the rock. The focus here is on a place to take a break, while the routes provide orientation through their respective courses.

Village history and visits

The “Uraalt Scholl” village museum is housed in a former school building in Mützenich; visits can be arranged by appointment. On display are rustic rooms with antique furniture and stuffed animals, as well as numerous agricultural implements. The collection offers insights into both the rooms of the house and agricultural equipment.

St. Bartholomew’s Church also marks a point in the village’s history: it was consecrated in Mützenich in 1850. The former school and the church, with its consecration date, represent different historical points of interest in the village.

In the wider destination of Monschau

Circular trail 15 offers the chance to explore Monschau’s old town independently. The town’s landmarks include the Red House, the half-timbered façades along the Rur and the castle. The Red House was built in 1760 by textile manufacturer Johann Heinrich Scheibler as a residence and business premises.

For a different perspective on Monschau, there is the “Monschauer-Land-Route” cycling tour, which passes through the cloth-making town, and the Monschau Glassworks. There, visitors can watch glassblowers shape vessels or glass figures from a glowing mass. Exploring the old town, architectural history, cycling and glassblowing each offer a different focus.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Mützenich, you can first decide whether you would like to focus on local hiking destinations and village history, or on culture and crafts in the wider destination of Monschau.
